who takes the credit losses when people default on their credit cards? V, or the underwriting banks? How does V make money? [ Reply | More ]

Visa is insured. They don't get back 1.00 for 1.00 they probably have about a 0.55-0.60 on the dollar recovery rate. They make money by charging interest fees to all of their customers. You buy something for $1000 using your visa card. if you have an interest rate of like 13% (which is good for Visa) that means that after a year that thing cost you $1130.00 (in theory, because most likely you'll pay off part of the principal every month so the balance will always be changing). The also charge business for the ability to accept visa cards, it's a very small amount per transaction, but it adds up. [ Reply | More ]

additionally they have travel services they make money from, deals with hotels and travel agents, there must be an annual report describing their business practices out there somewhere. as I said before they're not in my sector. Are you in finance, can you read a balance sheet? [ Reply | More ]

NP: You are so wrong. The banks take the credit risk and Visa just takes a fee as a % of the transaction. They are a transaction processor, not a risk taker. [ Reply | More ]

again, credit cards totally not in my sector, that's why I linked the annual report. Thanks for clarifying. I guess I was thinking it was in some convoluted way kind of similar to bond insurance. [ Reply | More ]
