Reposting from general board. Has anyone done, or known anyone who has done, the NYC teaching fellowship? My current career is incompatible with family life, and am looking for a change. Is anyone else considering this? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I have two friends that did it. One loves it, the other quit within the first three months [ Reply | More ]

I really can't go into specifics. Both were math folks. I think it just depends on your personality and your likes and dislikes. [ Reply | More ]

be wary if you think it is any less of a time commitment than you have now. i hear those kids can take your spirit! [ Reply | More ]

I have considered it a coupole times, but would be a huge pay cut, they want people in specialties that do not interest me, and you have to be willing to work mostly in very bad districts in the Bronx and Brooklyn. I can't convince myself that it is worth it. Also, I believe that many participants feel they do not have adequate support. [ Reply | More ]

plus, the hours are A LOT. Unless you already have a masters in education you have to take classes at night and over the summer, plus there is a lot of prep time, especially the first couple of years. It would probably be less compatable with family life than your current job. [ Reply | More ]
