Help re: discipline. Any recommendations for a 3 yo who won't sit still when given a time out (laughs, runs away). Also tried taking away his favorite things, but he doesn't care and actually help me put them away! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

the point of a timeout is not to have the child sit still. there are two possible goals of a timeout: one is to illustrate to the child that our "society" (household) has rules and if you want to be part of our society you have to follow them. the other option is to give the child a chance to calm down, learn to control himself, etc. Either way, i'd take to a bedroom with a door and close the door. hold it firmly from the other side until he learns that a time out means you stay in that room until you can behave properly. tried that but he throw all his clothes, books, etc. all over the room; sometimes takes off his diaper and pees. [ Reply | More ]

it doesn't matter. you can either set a time limit or tell him that when he's quiet and ready to behave he can call you and then he can come out. ignore the mess. [ Reply | More ]

I put my 3 yo in his room alone, w/ the door shut for 3 minutes. He hates it, though he loves to play in his room usually [ Reply | More ]
