Any suggestions for helping 4.5 yo deal with the anxiety of going to a new school? He is having a hard time, which has really surprised us because he's always been a well-adjusted kid and dealt very well with other life changes. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

don't discuss school. it's very early and all that'll happen is that he'll worry all summer and build it up into a really anxious-ridden ordeal. [ Reply | More

It is a full day camp. He is used to being in daycare 9-5, has been since he was 5 mo. One problem is that some kids at this new school go half-day and he gets upset when he sees them getting picked up. Teacher says he adjusting well but exhibiting some anxiety behavior like going to the bathroom every 15 min and cried at naptime on Friday. He has been worse at home -- exhibiting some OCD behavior like constant handwashing. Also will not sleep in his bed, only on the floor. [ Reply | More

yikes. he sounds really anxious over this. i'd suggest a couple of things...review the whole idea that some kids don't get to stay in camp all day but some kids do. and maybe make a special stop on the way home to buy ices or a cookie or something. that's special for kids who go home at 5pm. visit the school and let him play in the playground over the summer, talk with him about everything that will stay the same - routines, who will take him and pick him up, etc., try to set up playdates with other future classmates [ Reply | More
