My DD's birthday is in October. It's my understanding she can attend public K when she's 4.11 years old, but would not be accepted to private school K until the following year. If this is correct, do people send their DC to public K and then repeat K in private school? Also, when is the best time to take the ERB in this situation. Thanks for your help. my dc is in same situation. we decided to keep dc in private prek for an additional year, instead of going to public k and then to private. if dc gets into private k we will send, if not will put in public 1st grade. does that make sense? also, dc took erb this spring at 4.6 instead of waiting till fall [ Reply | More ]

OP - It seems you're a year ahead of us. We are in private nursury this year and were accepted to public pre-k for fall 2008. We were considering doing public pre-k and public k while applying to private k. What made you choose to skip public K if you don't get into private? Thanks [ Reply | More ]

It's not a choice. With Oct bday they will place your child in first grade, where dc belongs based on birthday. K is not mandatory in NY. [ Reply | More ]

or: we chose private prek bc i love dc's school and think she would benefit there for 1 more year and we think dc has a better chance of getting into private from private prek. [ Reply | More ]

Some people do have dc do K in public and repeat in private. There are also a few private schools with later bday cutoffs. Friends w/ a fall bday dc sent dc to Claremont Prep for this reason. [ Reply | More ]

you mean 4.91 - she will turn 5 after a month of school. 4.11 means she will not turn 5 till the next year [ Reply | More ]

keep in mind that if you go to public K, you will not have a preschool director helping you when you apply for privates. i think this is a major drawback -- the privates like having the insight a PSD gives. [ Reply | More ]
