Anyone have a good midwife to recommend? Expect to have an epidural (know from previous labors that I will probably need it), would like to deliver at St. Lukes, and prefer midwife as uptown as possible. TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I thought you can't have an epi in the birthing center there. [ Reply | More ]

I can't do the birthing center bc I'm VBAC, so I'll have to be in the L&D [ Reply | More ]

I would use an OB and have a doula for labor support. In the off chance that you need a repeat c-section, I would like to know the doctor who is doing it. I am vbac also, delivering with an OB and doula next month. I will be v. disappointed if I end up with another c/s, so I would like to have a strong relationship and trust in the person performing it if it comes to that. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ also, on the way off chance that something goes terribly wrong with your vbac, wouldn't you rather be at nyu, sinai, or cornell? [ Reply | More ]

I did a vbac at SLR, it was fine--why would she need another hospital? [ Reply | More ]

If all goes well, I think SLR is great. If god forbid there's an issue with the db or if there's uterine rupture, I would rather be somewhere else. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Honestly, I don't care too much who does the C. As far as I"m concerned, it's awful no matter what, and certainly can't be worse than my first C. Doctors are so reluctant to do VBACs and my last dr was such a jerk (walking out mid-delivery) that I want to avoid a dr above all. [ Reply | More ]

If you've already had one vbac, pretty much any doctor will support you in having another. There are a lot of female OB practices who would be VERY supportive. I would do that, and you'll be covered no matter what happens. [ Reply | More ]

wouldn't your ob need to be present, in case you need a section? good luck btw, i had a vbac 2 years ago, and it was great. [ Reply | More ]

OR from above: Can you tell me about your labor/vbac? I am so anxious about mine coming up. [ Reply | More ]

my water broke around 5am, and contractions started--it was all pretty textbook. I went to the hospital when the contrax were 10 minutes apart, labored for a while (which hurt a lot, but not horribly). I got an epidural, which was great, the pain went away, and I was much less stressed. My OB lowered the dosage for pushing, so i could feel the urge to push,a nd I felt the baby come out. It wore off really quickly as well. I had no tearing or problems, and recovery was a breeze. nothing a few tylenol couldn't handle [ Reply | More ]

This is great to hear! Thank you. I hope I will be you. Why did you have the c-section the first time? [ Reply | More ]

gotcha--I've heard that is the best scenario for vbac. i had an induction last time, so i am worried i won't progress, etc. the anxiety is killing me! [ Reply | More ]

I hope it works for you. in any case, everything is easier the second time around--you know what to expect, you have your systems in place. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you! Also, how long was it from when your water broke to when contractions started? And what time was db born? [ Reply | More ]

the contraxtions started right away, very mild a first. just like menstrual cramps that get worse and more frequent over time. water broke at 5am and dd was born at 2pm. it really was sooo much easier than i expected. it defintiely hurts (until the epidural lady shows up) but you can do it. OP: I already had one VBAC and it was great, except for the dr. He clearly was very angry that I decided to go through with it and tried to convince me to have a C the whole way through. [ Reply | More ]

that's awful. if you are delivering at SLR, call my OB, Dr. gae Rodke--very woman/VBAC friendly. she and her staff supported me every step of the way. [ Reply | More ]

The doctors who are like this now are few and far between. My original OB was like this (was set on doing a c-section with my first pg from the get-go, though I didn't realize it except in retrospect). But I hunted around and am amazed at the difference in my new practice. You just need to interview docs and listen carefully. [ Reply | More ]

Use Barbara Sellers in combination with the head of the department (perinatologist) forgot name. They work well together. [ Reply | More ]
