This may be a flame worthy post, not sure. 4 yo DD goes to a well regarded public school in Brooklyn. She has gotten notices about a child in the class having lice at least 3 times this year. Thankfully, she hasn't gotten them, but I find it so skeevy and don't recall this being an issue when I was a kid. I know anyone can get them, blah blah, but how do they start? Is it a child whose parents are not bathing them? Do private schools have outbreaks this often, too? I'm truly curious. It's just so vile to me. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My dc isn't in school yet but I do remember many lice "outbreaks" when I was in elementary school (in private school in an upscale neighborhood). [ Reply | More ]

oh please spare us your OCD. It happens, get over it. It happened when you were a kid and it will happen in the future and it's really not that big a deal. If you were a teacher in an elementary school you'd already have had them several times. [ Reply | More ]

it is not uncommon for ANY school in ANY location to have an outbreak. more than likely the parents are having a hard time getting rid of them. it can happen to any family and bathing does nothing to get rid of lice [ Reply | More ]

it happens everywhere. Brearley had an outbreak last year, I believe. Every private school has it at some point, most expensive camps do to. It has nothing to do with hygene. [ Reply | More ]

the cleaner the hair, the more the little bugs like it... dirty hair is "safer"... [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for the info guys. I know it was an awful musing, but it's hard not to associate lice with cleanliness. I'd better be careful, because DD's got long sort of straight hair. Just bought Rosemary scented detangle spray. Hopefully that will work... [ Reply | More ]

dd has "perfect" lice hair and I say that as a mom who does "lice patrol" at school... clean straight hair... just be careful with the hat/comb/brush thing and hope she doesn't get it at a playdate ! [ Reply | More ]

LOL, bet you never thought your your precious db would throw up in your hands either. Lice just goes w/the territory - once you had them (or been the one one that brought them to school) you will get over your willies. [ Reply | More ]

Lice happens everywhere, to every kid from every kind of household. Yeah, it's sort of gross, but so are diarrhea, mucous, and pinworms. Totally normal. [ Reply | More ]

dd never got lice in elementary school, because she hated to wash her hair...middle school, when she discovered how nice it was to have clean hair, she got them again and again and again [ Reply | More ]

Best way to avoid lice-do NOT let her wear her hair down. Pulled back or in braids works the best. Never share combs , brucshes or hats. Having said that, sometimes still can't be avoided. LICENDERS is a godsend when you need it... [ Reply | More ]

The good think about lice in privat schools is that they pay people to do lice checks everytime everyone comes back from any vacation. I'm amazed how inevitably someone has picked up lice when off in the south of france or in their house in the country... [ Reply | More ]

I grew up in affluent part of Long Island and went to a school with some pretty ritzy kids. I got lice in 3rd grade (as did the entire school). [ Reply | More ]
