MISERABLE - pls help: 3mo db (ebf) seems to have a food allergy/sensitivity (mucous in diapers, a tiny bit of blood a couple of times, "straining", gas, etc). I cut dairy, soy, red meat, citrus, tomatoes, nuts, eggs, wheat out of my diet & it didn't help. Been on total elimination diet for 3 days and it might have helped a bit - but nothing drastic. DH and pediatrician were both formula fed and keep saying "nothing's wrong with formula." We have an appt with a ped GI doc & I'm terrified they're going to out my db on nasty hypoallergenic formula. I read a bottle of that stuff - it's got like 100 ingredients and none of them are FOOD. Any ideas where to turn? tia [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

You need to know that what db is eating now is not working. Formula may indeed be best for him [ Reply | More ]

If someone can PROVE to me that my breastmilk is actually what the problem is - then, I'd consider it. [ Reply | More ]

I think the only way to do that is to try formula to see if the issues are resolved. Unless you eliminate the bm how will you know? [ Reply | More ]

That still wont be a definitive answer. I had been told db had "breastmilk janudice" when he was a few weeks old. We supplemented with formula and he got better. Went back to bm, he got worse. Sounds like it was the bm, yes? It wasn't. It was because he was getting MORE when he was being supplemented. I just knew something wasn [ Reply | More ]

Oh, I see. Can't hit return. Sorry. So: I decided to try pumping and making sure he got the exact same amount of bm that he was getting of formula. And lo and behold - he got even better than he had on the formula. Things are not as black and white as they seem with babies. [ Reply | More ]

Yup. He was doing great until a few weeks ago. He is incidentally really happy, cries very very little and has consistently gained weight really well. [ Reply | More ]

no one can prove that... and you are SO right to be skeptical. [ Reply | More ]

ty. I just know in my heart of hearts that my milk has to be what my db needs. (That whole "breastmilk janudice" experience really proved it to me.) Besides - how can a can of powdered, factory produced, genetically engineered CHEMICALS be better for the child who came from my body than food made by that very same body?? [ Reply | More ]

couple of thoughts...find some moms who have btdt. i think you have to cut out foods for a long time before you'd see a result in your db if your db is allergic. (i think i was told two weeks). second, there's really nothing wrong with formula. especially since your db is 3mo. think of it this way: bf'ing is best. but if something makes it not the best, then it's not the best anymore. take it one day at a time and don't put too much emphasis on any one issue. (and i'd recommend that as a general parenting rule, not just about this. don't let one issue become the gold standard in a way that badly affects other areas). good luck. [ Reply | More ]

don't lose sight of what makes sense. presumably, you want to bf b/c it's best for your baby. but if it's not best, be flexible to adjust. my baby was in the nicu when born and needed special formula. all the side things of nursing (the intimacy, the special connection, etc) happened with bottle feeding anyway. so just focus on the actual issue here. good luck. ty.. the bonding stuff is important to me, but it's really secondary. I really feel like bf is better for my db - and I only want what's best for him. If someone can really prove to me that formula is better for him - then I'll totally give it to him. [ Reply | More ]

speak to people who know. moms who have btdt. an allergist. the pediatric GI. get facts. again, i don't think three days is enough to show a difference if it's a real allergy. you might see switching to formula has an immediate improvement. it might not be an issue at all. [ Reply | More ]

I think that the most common allergy is milk protein, which my db had and I had to stop eating dairy myself while I was breastfeeding. Also, poster above is right that it can take a while (even weeks) before db's intestines are totally fine. [ Reply | More ]

wow. you are really screwed up in the head. Formula is a fine nutritional source for babies. We have been feeding it to millions of dbs who are healthy dc and adults. If your dc is not doing well on your bm, you need to move on and get over yourself! [ Reply | More ]

I feel fine about regular formula that's made with milk. The other ones I think are really sketchy--especially the Isomil, or whatever that one made with corn starch is. I agree with OP, even though I only bf-ed for 5 months and have no issues with formula. -np [ Reply | More ]
