Are the burbs dull and lifeless for kids? no, they can be great. Parents tend to be selfish about this "I will die if I leave Manhattan." I know, because I was one of them. It's great having the space, my own home office, kids no longer share their rooms, green and gorgeous trees, flowers all around. Entertain inside and outside. great cultural centers, kids love sports teams, art lessons, sailing, etc -- plus we go into city whenever we feel like it [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

and economically, people forget they no longer pay that NYC income tax which on an income of $300k+ is a huge amount of money (pays for real estate taxes in part) [ Reply | More ]

no, related to the one below that the mom says that living in burbs is "dull and lifeless". maybe for the mom who can't think outside the box, but for kids, it really is better to have the space/fresh air/riding bikes on the street with friends, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I moved out of the city w/ my kids and have the lifestyle you talk about but I also know that works well for me/my kids is not for everyone. Kids are just as happy in the city as ours in the burbs. [ Reply | More ]

We lived in the City and the only way we would have stayed was to have an apt with a big outdoor space plus maintain our home in the country -- reality is that sports dominate weekends so you can't really get away as often as you'd like [ Reply | More ]

You do pay something if you work in NYC even though you live in the suburbs. Or did they eliminate that? [ Reply | More ]

NYC was pissed it was eliminated and has been trying to get it back all along. it is the purview of the state legislature. And surprisingly, Shelly Silver spearheaded the move to eliminate it. There was a fight for a Rockland assembly seat and in order to bolster the candidate he took this action. Cost the city tons. [ Reply | More ]

$9K is a huge amount of money? Really? That's what it would cost to lease, fuel, insure, and repair the second car that you would need to live in the burbs. It's a wash. [ Reply | More ]

stupid to lease. buy a used car for $5K, you only need a station car anyway [ Reply | More ]
