I've heard good things about both Milburn & Maplewood, NJ, but they sounded pretty different from one another. I was surprised their train stations are right next to each other. Could anyone compare & contrast for me. TIA! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i grew up in Maplewood and we always thought the Millburn kids were more stuck up, less "real" than we were. A more adult perspective would say that Millburn is more homogenous, Maplewood more diverse. Millburn school system usually gets more kudos, but I loved my education in Maplewood, and it got me into a good college fwiw. [ Reply | More ]

Maplewood is much more diverse socioeconomically (with people who have their feet on the bottom rung of the economic ladder, people who have their feet near the upper rung, and everyone in between), racially (with a fair number of mixed race families as well), with gay families as well. It has a lot of (well educated) artists, musicians, Broadway performers, writers, architects, who are very involved in the communities and the schools. It therefore feels more urban and eclectic than most places, Millburn included. Our kids (one graduate,[in an excellent college] one current junior, one entering next yr) have gotten a very good education in schools from K through CHS; kids are interested in subject matter, are taught to be critical, imaginative, thinkers (dinnertime discussions are often lively!) and not just GPA, which we have heard, from several teachers and parents, is more the emphasis at Millburn HS. But, because of its homogenous (upper-middle class, white/Asian) nature, their average SAT's are higher. Depends upon what is important to you. [ Reply | More ]

maplewood is a pretty twon but surrounded by very very very very bad cities. the school is good, but not great. milburn has a much better school system. imo, if you are paying SO MUCH in taxes like in Maplewood, you at least deserve to have a school that is excellent, rather than good. Maplewood is surrounded by Millburn, the South Mountain Reservation, South Orange, Union, which together comprise more than 90% of the border and are all fine communities, and problematic Irvington (a few blocks, and the new police station has just moved to that area.) Please post accurately. [ Reply | More ]
