Hi, I wondered if I could hear from anyone who lives in a very old NYC coop and renovated bathrooms (or did them while renovating more of the apartment). I have heard you cannot renovate a bathroom in an old building without updating the plumbing in the vicinity of the renovation. Is this true? How big a job is that? And how much does one expect to pay (before tubs, sinks, tile, etc.) for basic labor, plumbing and basic materials on such a job, say per bathroom? Thanks. I know the cost of the tile, tub and sink we want, plus other fixtures. I am trying to estimate the cost of the total renovation. Assume the bathroom is decent but has not been updated other than cosmetically in decades. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

this is really an apartment by apartment thing....in NYC, you should estimate $25-35K total for a larger bathroom with nice tiles (but not huge or "designer-ish) [ Reply | More ]

does that 25K to 35k include replacing a lot of old pipes? [ Reply | More ]

If you have the walls open, you have to replace the plumbing to the riser. It is not that much more of an expense. You WANT to do this. [ Reply | More ]
