tmi...Period question - 21 year old daughter has never gotten consistent period - skips 2-3 months between periods, sometimes will get it only for a couple days and only a dark brown fluid. She is going to the doctor to figure things out when she gets in town (lives with my ex-husband). Any ideas what could be causing this though? Is it normal to have inconsistent periods until early twenties? Could this lead to fertility issues in her future? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

np: sounds like some sort of hormonal imbalance. Sounds like might be some form of PCOS. Look it up and see if she has other symptoms. And don't panic, it's very treatable. [ Reply | More ]

Don't know. Hormone imbalance sounds likely. Hope she's OK. Has she never been to a gyn before? [ Reply | More ]

has she seen gyn previously? or will this be the first time she will be going? possibly could be fertility issues, but definitely get her to dr asap. [ Reply | More ]

you are just finding out about this? i dont know exactly what dr will do, but internal exam for sure, sometimes dr put on bc pills to 'regulate' things, also dark brown blood means its old - probably because its not coming out of her every month. one person i know who had that, had fibroid issues, but she was 35-ish. yes, she only just told me about it - she lives on west coast with my ex and his wife - what did they do for your friend with the fibroid issues? what repurcusions did the fibroid issues have? [ Reply | More ]

np, you can do a google on firbroids - huge range - I have them and had successful preg and no difficulty conceiving, but others not so lucky. Besides, why don't you wait and see what hte doctor says first. I'm a little shocked that a 21 year old has never been to gyn. that is not good. [ Reply | More ]

my friend is 39 now and has been pg at least once, but no kids. But she has other issues, and besides your dd is only 21, and you have no idea what's going on. probably could be many things, not just this. good luck and i hope it all works out fine. can you post back and let us know what happened? thanks. maybe she hs fibroids. i have/had this problem. however, the way it happened to me is that blood would collect and collect and then GUSH out all over the place to the point where my clothes would be ruined. GL. I hope it isn't serious. You should go with her. [ Reply | More ]

I am thinking she might have fibroids or possibly she isn't eating a balanced diet being a college student. What did they do for you? [ Reply | More ]

i had mine removed. she'll have to get an u/s in order to find out. she needs to make sure to be very aggressive about this. many doctors will just put you on the pill. when i went on the pill, that's when all the problems happened to me. it can make it worse. [ Reply | More ]

i've heard things about a heat treatment through ultrasound which sounds like a good option - non-invasive. i imagine she would still be put on birth control regardless to regulate things though [ Reply | More ]

you'll have to talk to a competent doctor about these treatments. I was given the option of going on medication, etc, but decided against it because it basically throws your body into temporary menopause. the surgery was pretty non-invasive for the most part. i can tell you that i and several other moms i know with fibroids will not go on the pill because of what happened to us when we did. GL to your daughter! [ Reply | More ]

the pill as far as in relation to your fibroid or jsut in general? i was on the pill, no fibroid issues though, and it was fine for me [ Reply | More ]

the pill can make your fibroids grow. i've heard that it can shrink fibroids, but ime, and other moms i know to, it made it worse [ Reply | More ]

np: That's my thought too. Sounds just like my friend with PCOS. OP, does your daughter have slightly heavy body hair or problems with acne? Those are also things that can happen with PCOS. [ Reply | More ]

This sounds like PCOS. I am a doctor, and I have PCOS. Not everyone with PCOS has all the "classic" symptoms like excess hair, obesity, acne. I am slightly heavy, but no problems with excess hair. I knew a girl in my medical school class who was Korean and super skiiny, no acne, had PCOS. the main thing is the missed periods. The only way to know for sure is to get bloodwork done looking at the hormone levels and/or a transvaginal ultrasound to see if there are cysts on the ovaries. If you can't get a workup from a regular gyn (not all of them recognize PCOS easily) go to a reproductive endocrinologist. [ Reply | More ]
