The thing I hate most about parenting is negotiating the whole sleep thing. I feel like there is no reliable answer and that nobody can ever help me to figure it out - not expert, not my own instincts. We didn't CIO with my older child and though he sleeps well now, it took YEARS of what was sometimes torture. On the upside, I didn't have my heart torn out every evening the way I am now with my 6 month old who is in the process of crying it out. We started early and it was never "30 minutes the first night, 15 the second..." It is hours of crying. He also cries when I try to put him to bed and hold him in my arms, arching and crying and frustrated. What is the answer? I would be so grateful for any compassionate insight. The reason that we're doing CIO this time is that we felt it was ultimately less 'humane' for our older child to have had to not know how to put himself to sleep for so long. There was exhaustion and weepiness on all fronts using that technique as well. We were hoping that a hard week now would prevent hard years of sleeplessness. But it is so much more brutal than anyone has ever candidly shared with me that it would be. EVERYONE tells me the "it got easier night by night" story and it's just not true for my son. HELP!!! Honestly, I think you get what you get in terms of sleepers. Some kids are good and others are not, just like adults. All the CIO/or other methods in the world will not change your child's basic nature. IF the CIO is too much for you, stop it. In the end it won't make too much of a difference either way. That's my fear. Ugh. This is my SECOND, why aren't I good at this yet? I'm terrified I'm torturing him for nothing. I feel sick while he's crying, then so hopeful when the next night seems to go better...but he'll wake up an hour later and cry for an hour and a half. I always want to fold, but my dh has such traumatic memories of my older child's 3 year long battle with sleep - had to be held for each nap, each night's sleep...that he wants to stick with it. I'm really struggling. We tried CIO with older child, btw... didn't work. [ Reply | More ]
