I disagree with you. If he was unarmed and outnumbered, then there was not much that he could have done. If they only smacked her ponytail (and I know that is invasive and infuriating) then I don't think he should have put both of them at further risk. I really hate saying this because I am someone who can't stand to be hurt by others or to see others being hurt in any way, but I really think that to have confronted them would have meant putting both in a much more dangerous situation. At most, if they had their cell phones, they could have called the police once they were safe to report the train that these punks were on. [ Reply | More

I agree with you,,,but the situation is different. Bernie Goetz did not have a companion whose safety he had to worry about and it is easier to pump out 3 quick bullets than it is to get each person in a pack that greatly outnumbers you. Also...BG said that he already had his hand on his gun in his jacket because that is how he always rode the subway. This dh did not have his hand on his gun.
