if i could take back one thing in parenting so far, it would be the moment we let dc taste soda (because we were teaching dc to drink from a straw). dc became obsessed. that high fructose corn syrup is addictive stuff. [ Reply | More ]

How did you limit it? [ Reply | More ]

we've had to stop drinking it. ever. we will have one sometimes when we are out and we get a small cup for dc with mainly ice but some soda. we talk about how it tastes very good but is not healthy, so you should only have a little bit sometimes. it's been good for us to drink less anyway - and we do sparkling water with juice now primarily. but it was really striking how fixated, how quickly dc became. i think one of the worst things is what the first poster says here - it's addictive and so annoying to have to then say "no" a million times after they taste it. plus, it strips the teeth of it's healthy enamel and causes cavities, there's usually caffeine which has no place in a child's diet, there's either a ton of sugar or artificial sweeteners, neither of which the kid needs... A taste here and there isn't terrible but I wouldn't actually serve it to a young child. [ Reply | More ]
