Anyone watching the DNC thing on CNN? If so, have they come back from their behind closed doors meeting (dc is watching something that I don't want to interrupt)? TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I don't think it would change anything as far as supporters go. People who are Hillary fans would be fine with it. Obama people would probably hate her even more, but that's kind of irrelevant. [ Reply | More ]

The thing is though...if the roles were reversed and Hillary was ahead, I am positive that this whole meeting and motion to change the "contract" would not be taking place. [ Reply | More ]

I'm pro-Hill, but I think it's a mistake for them to chamge the rules mid-stream. Not at all fair to Obama and evokes the Bush-Gore FL debacle. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. I was kind of stunned by the whole story in Florida (the involvement of the Republican legislature and governor in creating this mess, etc.) - were you? [ Reply | More ]

NP: I am surprised because everyone knew the situation going in. They chose to broke the rules. Both candidates knew this from the start and signed a letter stating they understood this and would abide by it in the campaign. Now to have everything turned around like this...Regardless of who one's favorite candidate is, I just don't think this is right. [ Reply | More ]

OP: It's not about the candidates at this point - or not just about them anyway. It's about not disenfranchising almost 3 million voters who turned out and cast ballots in these states. You've bought into the whole media presentation, imho. [ Reply | More ]

No...I have not bought into anything. There was no hoopla about it until the race became close. [ Reply | More ]

OP: sigh. There was no hoopla reported in the media. There was a great deal of hoopla taking place at the party level from the beginning. The media only picked up on it when they could turn it into a Barack versus Hillary passion play. [ Reply | More ]

Oh please. If the parties wanted to move on this they could have. They could have made the leadership of Florida get off their butts and the citizens of Florida could have done the same. I don't want to hear any belly aching from any of them now. [ Reply | More ]

OK oh bright and enlightened one. Continue with your manifesto as I move on....I'll bet that in 2012 the same state of Florida will be whining about something else that's gone totally wrong with the voting in their state once again. [ Reply | More ]

Trust me baby...if there is one thing that I am not, it's apathetic. Crap like this wouldn't happen where I have a vote. I am an EXTREMELY active citizen and I would not sit on my ass while my state craps on me with each election. [ Reply | More ]

I think that you are trying to come across as the one who knows it all, but really this situation should not be happening in Florida AGAIN. (I will give Michigan a pass since it is their first time...to put it lightly.) This is the third time that there has been a very serious problem there. There is no excuse for this and if the citizens don't realize this by now, then this really is their fault. [ Reply | More ]

OP: far from knowing it all, what I have expressed repeatedly is how much information was not readily available until today when - instead of creating sound bites - the media presented the entire meeting live. [ Reply | More ]

I didn't, no. I just can't believe how this has gotten so screwed up. And, really, you can't say that the votes that were placed then would translate now. I doubt I'm alone in being a democrat who voted on the candidate whom I thought would be able to win the general election. Then it was Hillary, now it is most certainly not. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I don't necessarily disagree with you, but the fact is that almost 3 million voters (and in the case of Florida more than TWICE the number of voters than in any other primary ever) turned out to vote in good faith and should not be cast aside because Republican leadership in the state (speaking about FL here) set up this fiasco to play out this way. Oh, ita. Of course their votes should count. I can't believe that the state or the democratic party, or whoever, screwed it up so badly that the entire state voted illegally and the votes didn't count. It is mind-boggling. [ Reply | More ]

OP: it is, isn't it? It turns out that the Republican FL state legislature attached the change in date to a bill about creating PAPER TRAIL for electronic ballots - which was something that had been heavily lobbied for by the Democrats and which they would have LOST if they had voted against it. So the Republicans set this up. [ Reply | More ]

Well if they care so much about what the leadership of their state does, then they should have spoken up years ago...like 8 years ago. How on earth can one state totally "F" up elections the way that Florida does. I'm sick and tired of them whining about it after the fact. [ Reply | More ]

OP: the point is that THEY DID. You (and I) just didn't hear about it. This issue of the structure of the primary and caucus system has been being addressed and fought over for the past decade within the party and among the states. [ Reply | More ]

My in-laws live in Florida. My MIL is VERY active. She said the problem is that too many of the citizens just "trust" that the leaders will do the right thing...and then they are stunned when it doesn't happen. How many friggin times can the same (or similar) things happen in the same state????? [ Reply | More ]

OP: yeah, I agree with you. But that's the nature of humans. More people are more likely to respect authority than to question it. When I lived in Houston in 2000, they CLOSED my polling place and gave no alternative. It took me 6 hours to find someplace that I could vote. Most people of course could not and/or did not take that time (my polling place was in a primarily Democratic district - so NONE of those votes got cast). Politics is REALLY ugly at the grass roots level. [ Reply | More ]
