Who can help? DS, 3.5, doesn't like meeting strangers or talking to people he doesn't know that well. When someone like this says hi to him, he closes his eyes and pretends to be asleep. It's embarassing. I'm trying to teach him social cues, but should I punish him when he pulls this? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'd be more apt to ignore this [ Reply | More ]

ditto - or work with rewards (one M&M for each socially appropriate greeting or something like that) [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry...but I just don't see the point in giving him candy for doing this. He is perfectly normal and I really think this method would only be teaching him bad habits...the candy...wanting something for doing something unnecessarily. [ Reply | More ]

My dd isn't shy, but sometimes she gets snappy with people. I tell her, "It isn't polite to talk like that. Please use a sweet voice" or "Please be kind" Sure, it sounds moderate, but it works [ Reply | More ]

I think I'm trying to teach her to be empathetic more than warning her. Sometimes I tell her, "When someone talks that way to you, does it feel nice?" Just to try to get her to understand from the other person's perspective [ Reply | More ]

My dh says he was like this as a kid- he's still shy. It's just his personality, which I don't think you can change. [ Reply | More ]

Punish him? No way. I would not be concerned at all. He is only 3. [ Reply | More ]

I don't punish for that at all. When my kids first meet someone they're shy. But once they've been around that person for a little bit they warm up. It's fine. [ Reply | More ]

you can't punish him for it. you can talk to him about it, and keep drilling it into his head how he is supposed to act, but it may not do anything. My ds has Asperger's, and one of the exercises they do in his class is to practice meeting people. They even sing a song that goes something like, "when you meet someone new, look him in the eye, shake his hand and say HELLO!" something like that.... anyway, I wouldn't worry about it, he is probably just shy, and people will just have to be understanding that he is only 3 yo and shy. I think it has helped ds a little. He is pretty good about meeting people now - he is at least polite. [ Reply | More ]
