My 22 mth old daughter has been diagnosed with asthma. She was prescribed albuterol to inhale with a machine and mask every 4 hrs as needed beginning on Monday. This medicine is dangerous as she has been more than hyper. She has been falling and injuring herself. She fell last night and gashed her forehead on the radiator. We were in the E.R. until midnight. Thank God she's better, now. I gave her one treatment this morning at 7am and have refused to give her any more. It is too dangerous for her. I've rubbed eucalyptus cream on her chest and she seems to be wheezing less. Any other moms go through this? Any homeopathic suggestions for asthma? Do you find that all Drs diagnose children for asthma if they are coughing and wheezing a little? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

there is no reason why she should be on albuterol around the clock. She needs a maintenance inhaler. I wouldn't mess around w/ homeopathic remedies when it comes to airway issues [ Reply | More ]

I only gave it to her 7am, 11am, 3pm, and 7pm. Not while she was sleeping. Was this too often? [ Reply | More ]

You should not need to do this for several days. She should be on a maintenance steroid inhaler to avoid exacerbations. Also, is she still wheezing? She may need a short course of oral steroids. I would also make an appointment w/ a pulmonologist (do it now-it often takes 3-4 months to get an appointment). [ Reply | More ]

She continues wheezing-it sounds like her chest is rattling and she has been coughing a little. [ Reply | More ]

the key here is 'every 4 hours as needed'. she may need it only for a few days until it flares up again (which may not be for months). My 2 yo ds has asthma too, and takes albuterol (xopenex and pulmicourt) when his asthma gets bad, but he has only had 2 flare ups since diagnosed. [ Reply | More ]

That xoponex is much better for tachycardia (fast heart rate) associated w/ albuterol [ Reply | More ]

OR: Yes, my ds hasn't had any side effects from it - no hyperactivity. It is super expensive, though. [ Reply | More ]

Well if she is wheezing wouldn't that be as needed? The albuterol doesn't seemto be helping but, the eucalyptus cream does. I got it off of a home remedy website? [ Reply | More ]

Dear, please don't give your asthmatic baby eucalyptus cream (not only that, anyway). Talk to your doctor about different brands/kinds/doses of albuterol. My ds (the one on xopenex) doesn't have hyperactivity. Maybe you just need to switch meds. [ Reply | More ]

DS was in the PICU once (actually many times) w/ an asthma exacerbation and the switch from albuterol to xoponex was startling (his heart rate was over 220 w/ the albuterol) [ Reply | More ]

Maybe, I was so scared the way she was climbing the walls, running into furniture, falling down. My neighbor said that she looked like she was drunk. i didn't want her little body reved up like that. [ Reply | More ]

No, I don't blame you. That is really scary, and you can't have her getting hurt. But she needs asthma meds. There are alternatives. [ Reply | More ]
