Need an opinion, please. There is a man with severe physical deformities (obviously born that way) that works as a cashier at a local store. This also affects his speech, but he seems nice and does a good job. I often notice that other customers (especially those with dc) avoid his line and will actually wait on a long line other than go through his. This saddens me and I try to choose his line if I have the chance. Is that patronizing of me to do? Is it a kind thing? thanks [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Well, I'd be an avoider, too, but not because of me or my kids, because of him. I wouldn't want my kids to say right to his face, "mom, what's WRONG with him? He looks yucky" you know that kind of thing. That's probably a lot of what's going on [ Reply | More ]

OP - I do understand and have spoken to ds about this, so he can understand how people can differ and that this man has feelings. [ Reply | More ]

I've done that with my kids, too, but it's just too embarrassing to have all the questions spill out right in front of someone. [ Reply | More ]

OP - I know what you mean. ds is a little bit older (5) and he tends to notice things quietly and then ask me later. Fortunately! [ Reply | More ]

Can't wait til that day when the quiet observations take place and questions come later. Right now it's more like "MOMMY. THAT GUY HAS NO HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" [ Reply | More ]

OP - lol! This would actually be so much worse, as this man is missing some fingers and others are only about and inch long or so. [ Reply | More ]

it's not patronizing if you go to the line that's shortest whether it's his or someone else's. also, tell your kids about people being different... [ Reply | More ]
