Been agonizng over the private or citywide choice and feel like we'll end up at NEST (if ds gets in) due to the money, even though I really prefer the private (rather not say where, but not TT). Not sure which would be best for dc in the long run. While we feel incredibly lucky to possibly have this choice, it's stressing me out. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

op: yeah, that's what we're thinking. We also have a fair amount of debt and need to save for retirement (in our 40s). Feel like with public, at least we could work on that and still take a vacation or two and send dc to a good camp in the summer. It would be a real challenge to do the private, even with FA. You shouldn't do it. Really - think of it this way - private school is financially out of reach for *most* kids in the NYC area, including most very smart kids. [ Reply | More

A lot of people do private in elementary school only because they want private for middle or high school and believe it will be too hard to get in at that point. If DS goes to NEST through elementary school and then you decide to go private for middle, he'll be extremely well-positioned to get into a top-tier (versus comp from gen eds.) [ Reply | More

Nest is probably not too far off a non-TT private. If in debt, no retirement, and in your 40s, this is a no-brainer. GL getting in! :) [ Reply | More
