You know what is starting to really bug me? Nannies. I am a sahm with two small kids, so i'm out and about at all the local kid-oriented places. The nannies I see, by and large, are so disinterested and ambivilent about the kids they're watching. They travel in packs and the kids run wild while the nannies all chat amongst themselves. I know all mothers and fathers are entitled to moments of boredom or laziness, and i've been in plenty of situations where the mom's all get together and the kids run wild. but it's just becoming so galling to see so many kids out with people who don't connect with them meaningfully. and when the kids are older, the nannies who do pick-up and drop-off generally speak so little english (or just don't care) that they don't engage with the teachers or other parents and miss all of the nuanced stuff that happens there. if my kid gets a time-out, i want to know exactly what happened, you know? there are plenty of bad parents out there, and lots of parents who may have different priorities than mine, but seeing all these kids with their nannies is just starting to drive me crazy. I bet the teachers love them. They hate overinvolved moms that try to corner them at pick up when all they are trying to do is make sure all kids get to their parents/caregivers so they can get out of there. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know... sure there are uninvolved nannies, but there are many fabulous nannies, who clearly love their charges and connect with them very well. I see other nannies, and I also had nannies, and honestly, I could tell how good or bad my nannies were (though I realize some parents don't have a clue about their nanny) [ Reply | More ]

Ambivalent. You sound dumb and small-minded. You obviously are smug. [ Reply | More ]

np: I think she doesn't notice the good nannies. They don't stick out like the bad ones. [ Reply | More ]

I do the same thing - notice the crummy ones. But friends have wonderful nannies, I've seen them in action over several years. They care about the kids and are engaged with them. [ Reply | More ]
