Do you think the NYC Dept of Ed is going to take back the wrongly-awarded pre-k slots? If so, can you imagine? With all the crap you have to put up with in this city, you actually luck out for once and get a mistake IN YOUR FAVOR and it gets taken away? No way. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

They have to. They just have to. They've got to follow their own rules, that everyone has relied on in making their plans. [ Reply | More ]

They can't give people spots and then take them back. Nobody was guaranteed a spot. [ Reply | More ]

Yes but if the DOE guaranteed a certain order of priority - sib, zoned, unzoned - and if they didn't follow it, those parents who weren't given the promised priority have the basis for a lawsuit. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe, but what is the point? Besides, a lot of people will turn down their spots so they may well be able to accomodate at least the siblings. [ Reply | More ]

What is with this lawsuit stuff. They will deal the best they can. Have you never made a mistake at work? [ Reply | More ]

Hey, I'm not suing. But if I were the DOE I'd be worried about the liability issue - seems like it would a slam dunk case. [ Reply | More ]

You would have to be a complete jackass to sue the DOE because of an error placing a child in prek. [ Reply | More ]

You mean not zoned for a school that has a pre-k program? [ Reply | More ]

np, there is a zone where they closed the school and all of the peoplle in that zone (151) are sent to neighboring schools by lottery [ Reply | More ]

Its not easy to get a preK spot from the 151 zone. But K spot in 6, 158, 59 or 198 guaranteed. I think PS 198, 158, and 59 have preK programs, but last fall the 158 principal said there were not enough preK spots at her school to accomodate 151 folks. That leaves PS 198 and 59 for preK options - I guess. [ Reply | More ]

NP: 198 preK is great, and full day, and less likely to fill because of 198 elementary rep as sub-par. I know many parents whose kids attended 198 preK and they were very, very happy, most ended up at LL. [ Reply | More ]

You should consider private. Go to some open houses and tours and see. We decided on public, but you may find a private you can't live without. [ Reply | More ]

Hijack: How do you know if you are zoned or not for pre-k? [ Reply | More ]

no one is zoned for perk. What I think you are asking is does your zoned school have a prek program. You find that out by looking on insideschools (which is not alwlays up to date) and calling your zoned school and asking. [ Reply | More ]

Oh,ok. Thanks! I am new to all of this... Can you try for a school that's next to your zone as well? Or are you stuck with the local school? [ Reply | More ]

if you are talking about prek, chances are you will not get in a school different from your zoned school. But you can try for anything in your district. [ Reply | More ]

DOE seems in fact to be withdrawing acceptances: re one Brooklyn pre-K, this was posted pn Inside Schools forum (copied from local listserve:POSTING HERE FROM ANOTHER LIST: They have the list of acceptances, but are refusing to register anyone who is not in zone or siblings. If your kid is a sibling or in zone, and was rejected, please contact the PS10 office to put your name on the list. They are sending a list to DOE of kids who got rejected. By last count today 9 siblings and 3 zoned kids were rejected, that they know of, but there are doubtless more. On the flip side, there were many kids who were accepted that shouldn't have been--out of zone, out of district even, with no siblings, and even kids who didn't have PS10 as their first choice. They are not going to register these people until all the siblings and zoned kids have been accommodated. The DOE has agreed to this. I am passing this info on because PS10 wants to make sure they get everyone on their list to the DOE who was wrongly rejected. Please pass this info on. [ Reply | More ]

Could someone explain the situation on wrongly awarded pre-k slots? My DD got into 158 but we are torn over pulling her out of private school, however, the $ savings would be great. Did they award to outside of zone? [ Reply | More ]

It is pretty clear that they rejected sibilings. Other issues have been mentioned, check out the blog at insideschools.org to see what others are asserting. [ Reply | More ]
