Planning the dreaded first trip to Disney with DCs. Can anyone tell me whether it's worth the extra $ to stay at a Disney hotel? FWIW, we'd only be going to Disney World and Epcot and generally won't need a car to go to other Orlando attractions. Thanks. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

just speaking selfishly - know it will not be a 'vacation' in the true sense of the word, as I know we'll all be running around ragged [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but the look of amazement and wonder in your kids eyes will be worth it (as long as they are between the ages of 4-10) [ Reply | More ]

I see. I think it will be more fun than you might anticipate, but yes - you will be tired! [ Reply | More ]

NP. How old are DCs? You will be tired but totally do-able if you are well-organized with your daily itinerary. Stay at a Disney Hotel--totoally worth the convenience. [ Reply | More ]

I love Disney and I totally agree that it isn't a vacation for the parents. It is lovely to see how magical the kids find it and they have a blast but it is exhausting and taxing on the nerves. [ Reply | More ]

I think its worth it to stay in park, you get extra hours in am and pm in the parks, and so much less time wasted travelling. fyi, disney world refers to the whole entire property, magic kingdom is the part with the castle, tomorrowland, etc. [ Reply | More ]

worth the money and you'll get free transport to an d form the airport so need need for a car at all. just made the whole experience "Disney-esque" There are also special Magic Hours where you can go in early or stay late as a Disney guest. [ Reply | More ]

It's definately worth it to stay on Disney property - you will save hours of travel time and waiting time than if you stay off property. [ Reply | More ]

OP: quick extra question - any Disney hotels you gals would recommend? I've read horror stories about bad housekeeping, noise, etc. at some of the hotels. Any BTDT info greatly appreciated. [ Reply | More ]

What's your price range? [ Reply | More ]

I know they're all exorbitant. No price limit, although I'd want the cheapest room at the nicest hotel, if you know what I mean. [ Reply | More ]

if you are not on a budget Fort Wilderness Lodge is consistently the highest rated by Conde Naste Traveler ,etc. Really nice 5 minute ferry to Magic Kingdom. [ Reply | More ]

You have to stay on the monorail - so either Contemporary, Floridian or Polynesian. My feeling is - if you are going and only going once - go all out and stay at the Floridian. Call as soon as you can for the character breakfasts - the kids LOVE them - Chef Mickey, Princess ones - go for it. [ Reply | More ]

Loved the Wilderness Lodge, middle price range for Disney. If I had more $, would do Grand Floridian or Polynesian. Better locations, right on monorail. [ Reply | More ]

WL is more than the Polynesian and in better condition. Almost as close as the other three, newer rooms and 5 minute (max) direct boat ferry to the Magic KIngdom. [ Reply | More ]

get out. when we went in 05, WL was less than Polynesian. My kids loved the boat ride, but it would have been more convenient to be right on the monorail. [ Reply | More ]

I found the boat ride a nice wind down from the park. taking the monorail was like taking the subway IMO [ Reply | More ]

LOL. My kids have never ridden subway, so they loved either. Anyway, I would def stay at WL again, waiting for little one to turn 3 before we go back. That's my minimum age to go. [ Reply | More ]

not any more! most of teh family travel magazines put it as the top disney pick (along with Animal Kingdom Lodge). You need to take a bus to AK, no matter what....not a big Epcot fan myself so monorail made no difference fo rme. [ Reply | More ]

I'd pick Grand Floridian or Wilderness Lodge. Contemporary is best for convenience, but not as nice. GL or WL are both very close and very high quality. I agree that you need to call asap for character breakfasts, etc. [ Reply | More ]

we're going for the first time this summer. only for a few days -- plan to hit MK, epcot, and AK. staying in the park, on the monorail. don't feel like dealing with driving or a shuttle bus. [ Reply | More ]

It is not so bad. I took my DD when she was 4 1/2 and it was perfect for her! It was one of hte most memorable trips because she was a Disney World virgin and I got to see her first joyful experience. She was so so so happy. [ Reply | More ]

On the property is a must. Monorail isn't as important, the shuttle busses were fine, convenient, and painless. We stayed at the Mardi-Gras themed hotel, don't remember the name. Not a top-hotel, but it was fine. Clean, lovely, but not luxury [ Reply | More ]

good choice if you are on a budget though...allowed my school teacher bil and sis to go with their three kids. Some of the other resorts (including WL) *do not* allow families of five and would have required her ot have two rooms or a (very hard to get) resort. [ Reply | More ]

I think it is very much worth it to stay at a place on the monorail line... We went knowing that the vacation was about 'them" and we actually were able to relax knowing that it wasn't about us at all and the day was out of our contraol but in a good way. Anyway, being on the monorail line made going back for naps and rest and pool time easy and made the trip a pleasure... [ Reply | More ]
