I just read that in the 50s, women got knocked out for birth (totally unconsc) how did the kid come out without pushing? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Drugs (pitocin) to start labor), BECAUSE she was knocked out. Then when necessary, pulled out with forceps. And this is also when episiotomies became common, because mothers weren't conscious to assist or push and doctors needed a larger opening (and faster deliveries), so would need to cut. Yes, because it was easier for the doctors. That's the only reason this was done and unfortunately, many current labor practices are still based on this method. Even with having a woman laying down during labor, which slows the labor, was started because they were unconscious. [ Reply | More ]

Yup. And the sad part is that women didn't have a choice - doctors dictated labor and delivery and women were forced to go along with it. dh's who wanted to be at their wive's side were forced to wait outside. Could you imagine if your dw died on the table and you couldn't be with her? [ Reply | More ]
