I need some advice. my very close friend is always depressed (yes, she's on medication for it but she still has lots of depressive episodes) and lately she has been really bringing me down. usually I am very good at detaching but I just have been feeling a lot of negativity around her. I am empathetic to her feelings to a fault and am starting to wonder if maybe I've been somehow "enabling" a lot of her dysfunction. how can I get back my detachment and also make sure I am not enabling her without losing empathy for her feelings? isn't it a friend's job to validate the other person at least to some degree? when do you know you are doing it too much? would love to hear about someone else's experience with this...
