HELP! DD (2.5) was toilet trained with no accidents in two weeks... now she's had 7 accidents in two days~! Doesn't want to sit on the potty, didn't even tell me when she pooped in her underwear.... Any advice appreciated. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It's a process. You have to help make it a success for at least 6 months by asking "Let's try the potty" every couple of hours. I have a 6 yo who will still grasp her vagina and dance in place while she colors and I have to say "I see you have to go to the bathroom, so go". The get absorbed and forget and at 2.5 have accidents and then shame. Help her out. [ Reply | More ]

I want to reinforce the notion that poopinjg in her underwear is not OK (of course she knows) without shaming her [ Reply | More ]

thats not how it works (and - with that attitude - i am not surprised you are having problems) you reward GOOD behavior - not punish bad. its the most effective way to teach (proven in animal, adult and child studies) np [ Reply | More ]

are you kidding me? my attitude is fine, I don't shame her, of course it's all positive reinforcement, that's how she trained herself in the first place.... just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on handling regression. Helpful thoughts, not lecturing. [ Reply | More ]

Below poster here. I think it was the comment about it NOT being ok to poop in panties (seemed like you were annoyed and she should know better). She is 2.5 and can't alwasy remembers. She spent 2.4 years pooping in her pants and can't unlearn that in 2 weeks without help and a few forgetful moments. That's all. GL. [ Reply | More ]

Ah. Well, I wasn't saying that to HER, I was saying that to you anonymous folks to just vent a little bit. [ Reply | More ]

OP, regressions are VERY common-- not necessarily your fault but just try to keep your wits about you. GL [ Reply | More ]

But she didn't tell you because she is ashamed and worried about your reaction. You have to say "You're learning to use the potty, mommy will help you remember next time. It's ok you had an accident." and then tell her to try the potty every 1.5 hours or so. Kids poop around the same time each day. Be home and ask her to go. [ Reply | More ]
