Can we talk lice in schools? In a general sense; experiences with liceneders, hair fairies, over the counter shampoo, preventitive measures, old wives tales that work etc? I don't know why but families are so incredibly afraid to admit that their child had lice (even when the class is notified that its in the classroom) - maybe on an anon board we can all share tips? We had lice about 5 years ago - me too, YUCK!. I looked into the services, but got really nervous that we'd shell out around $1000 (5 in family and they'd have to do all even the 2 that didn't seem to have it) when the school really didn't monitor all kids that well and lice notices had been coming home for months that year. So we bought otc shampoos and washed the hell out of our hair, washed all sheets, pillows, etc and wore olive oil in our hair all day for about a week. We haven't had a problem since. We did pay 1k for entire family and then became reinfested because the other parents in the class didn't treat properly. The next time we did otc for weeks on end. [ Reply | More ]

What are hair fairies? We haven't been hit yet - knock on wood - but I haven't seen any reluctance to admit dc had lice among the families we know. What school are you at? [ Reply | More ]

the otc shampoos (rid) have chemicals and only kill live bugs, not nits. we've never gone through this, but i've been told that the best thing to do is use a nit comb, and make sure you comg every day for a few days, to ensure you have ridden yourself of all the nits. the bugs die easily -- they need a head to host and cannot live on sheets, stuffed animals, rugs, and the like. they're head lice, not bed bugs or body lice. do the combing, vacuum your couches and rugs (for sanity more than anything else), wash your sheets, and that's that. I have a question on this one - all the places that treat you in nyc say that a)rid doesn't work that the lice have become immune and b)that they have harsh chemicals. So what is in the shampoo that Hair faires and the like? You can't kill a living thing with something that isn't harsh. So, what is the ingredient that kills them if not a harsh chemical? The chemical shampoos do not work in my experience. Hair Fairies will sell you a shampoo with Tea Tree (which is not so great as it has phytoestrogens I think) that you can use in the kids' hair. They also show you how to put tons of conditioner in the hair, let it sit, and then comb out the hair with long metal tooth lice comb wiping after each stroke against a white towel to look for nits. Keep doing it until you are clean wiping for a few days. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you, so what you are saying is that Hair Faires sells you something just as harmful, but because it is "natural" people think it isn't harmful? I'm being serious, not snarky - honest. I'm trying to figure out how you could kill a living organism without a pestiside (natural or man made). Not the nits, I get that part, but the animals themselves. [ Reply | More ]

Did you use Rid and it didn't kill all of the lice? [ Reply | More ]

There's a really amazing orthodox lice lady in Borough Park (Abigail Rosenfeld - she was written up in the New Yorker a few years ago). It's a schlep from Manhattan but her work is much faster and much, much less expensive than Licenders, Hair Fairies, etc. Very effective treatment - she took care of me and both our dds and we had no recurrences. Highly, highly recommend her over Licenders (cost us $1200 the time we used them, much more painful, had to oil our hair for a week). [ Reply | More ]
