So many crane accidents. I feel like things are being rushed to be finished. I wonder if this rush to complete the build has something to do with all of the mishaps [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

True, but I blame Bloomberg, who has been very pro-development, but has not been as proactive in making sure that the building frenzy is being regulated sufficienctly. And don't get me started on lack of foresight to make sure infrastructure and schools can support these new developments. [ Reply | More

If there were thorough building inspectors and a likelihood that you will get caught and severely punished for cutting corners, then the contractors would be much less likely to do take shortcuts. [ Reply | More

that's a pretty hefty accusation to make considering how the accident happened. apparently the cab and arm fell over. I would think even the most evil contractors out there would have a vested interest in a safe crane b/c (1) cranes crashing hurts their construction site, (2) costs them a LOT of money, and (3) it's a big expensive mess to clean up, and (4) cranes are usually contracted out anyway because it's such a specialized piece of equipment, so even the contractors have sub contractors for cranes.
