My DD was accepted to PS 158 pre-k program. This is our local school so she may be going for K next year. She's currently attending a private school nursury program and we are torn whether to move her. Any opinions on the quality of the program vs. the average private pre-k on UES? ALso does attending public pre-k hurt my DD chances of getting into a private K program? The $15K savings would be nice, but I want to do what is best for her. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No opinion on how it affects chances of getting into private K, but my friends who have done public pre-K in other schools (9, 87) have been very happy. If the pre-K at ds's zoned elementary school was half-day and we had gotten in, I definitely would have sent him. I didn't think he was ready for full-day, full time though. [ Reply | More ]

It would be great if your DD does not get the older preK teacher. My DS went to 158 for preK. [ Reply | More ]

Can you provide any more detail on your experience at 158? How many pre-k classes do they have? What is wrong with the older teacher? Thanks. [ Reply | More ]

When we were there, there were 3 classes. 1 AM, 1PM and 1 full day. The older teacher was out at least once a week. She was very unreliable. Complained to ME about how it was a PITA to take the kids outside to play. I can go on and on. I do think the whole school is great though. [ Reply | More ]

DD was accepted to the full day program. Which class does the older teacher handle? Also, how many assistant teachers are in the class? Thanks. [ Reply | More ]

She handles the half day classes. The full day teacher is a nice, competent person so I think you DC will do well. There's 1 assistant per class. [ Reply | More ]

If you want to go private I would stay private. I switched in the last year, had to supplement dc a ton because many of the dc's in the class had never been in school. Had the beg the teachers to completee forms, several were still not recieved in Jan, only got into 1 of 4 privates we applied to. [ Reply | More ]

We are torn about what to do after pre-k. We have 2 children and private school for both would be a stretch. We will apply for G&T programs as well as some private schools. [ Reply | More ]

We were in the same boat and got into a good G&T so opted for public with 1st. 2nd won't be a stretch so we will either go to same G&T as older sib or private. I have heard very good things about 158 so I would tour and decide before you make a decision [ Reply | More ]

we never considered private as an option, but we kept dd in preschool during what would have been her pre-K year. In retrospect, I regret it because most of the other parents chose to put their kids in pre-K and dd ended up being one of just a handful of 4yos who stayed and was placed with mostly 3 yos. Not a tragedy though, in the greater scheme of things [ Reply | More ]

Could you please clarify. DD will turn 4yo shortly after entering pre-k this fall. Are you saying she would actually be in class with 3yos at 158? It was my understanding that she could enter public K in fall 2009 (at 5yo) but private schools would not accept her until the following year. I find this so confusing. [ Reply | More ]

no. I'm saying that most of dd's preschool classmates went to pre-k. we decided to keep dd in preschool and start public school with K, when she was 5. so most of the kids she ended up with at preschool were younger. is that clearer? [ Reply | More ]

Didn't you already sign contract for private? [ Reply | More ]

Yes. Needed to sign a contract since there is no way to keep your spot given the timing of when public pre-k letters are sent. A number of parents in our school did the same thing so I'm hoping (assuming) I will only loose my down payment and not need to pay the full amount. Otherwise the decision is made for us. I just verified that I have until July to cancel my private school contract. Now its a matter of getting a tour of 158. I called the school and was told there was not tours until October. Absolutely no help in providing a minimal amount of information on the program. This is my fear of going from private to public. We found out about this program just before the application deadline and wasn't able to tour then. Could anyone give me information on the full time program? Number of kids in class? Hours of full time prgram? I will try to contact the parent coordinator [ Reply | More ]
