Isn't it obvious that sibling policies, for both public and private schools, should be eliminated? I see no rationale whatsoever for sibling preferences. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Did you just read my response below or is this a coincidence? I understand sib preference and can see the benefit (and I have an only child). Can you honestly not find a single postivie about the opposite side of the issue? Most things in life are not 100% black and white. [ Reply | More ]

If ALL siblings cannot be placed, I don't see the point. If there are schools which guarantee that all sibs can go to school together (e.g., zoned public schools) then I see the point. [ Reply | More ]

Why all siblings? You don't want to place siblings into a school they aren't qualified for. It would be no favor to anyone. [ Reply | More ]

My point is not that kids should be placed in a school they aren't qualified for. My point is more that if the point of a sibling policy is to keep the kids in the same community & to make it easy on families, then why extend that policy only to SOME families and not to others? So - sib policy for schools with a mission to educate all kinds of kids and no sib policy for selective schools. [ Reply | More ]

In all honesty, most of the kids will do fine. This "qualification" for schools is such an elitist mentality. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think that the DOE or anyone else for that matter are saying to put children into programs the aren't "qualified" for anyway. Are you talking about something specific? [ Reply | More ]

I was just answering the poster above who said "You don't want to place siblings into a school they aren't qualified for." I'm not sure what SHE meant. [ Reply | More ]

What I meant was if the sibling does not score anywhere near the G&T cut off then G&T program is not likely to be the right place for him/her. Odds are the child will be better off elsewhere. [ Reply | More ]

np. I don't see why the selective schools shouldn't have a preference policy for qualified siblings. [ Reply | More ]

I only have one, but I think sibling policies (as long as other qualifications are met) are a good idea. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not sure why people find this idea so difficult to understand. It makes perfect sense to me to give siblings a preference, the schools already know the family and they are already part of the school community and of course people want their children to go to school together and be part of the same community. It's unfortunate that they take up the spots but it's completely reasonable. [ Reply | More ]

Quality of life does not count? You are okay with the idea that families with more than one kid have to go all over town to drop-off and pick-up the children? [ Reply | More ]

many families are ok with this, and do it on purpose even. Almost all public school families have kids in different schools at several points because you move from one to the next. I think sibling preference is fine if younger child is a good match for the school but if not it can be bad even. Sometimes kids do better in different schools. [ Reply | More ]

are they ok with it because they really like going all over town? I bet that each one of them would love to see all the kids on the same school. Of course, the kids have to have similar academic capabilities. [ Reply | More ]

Even with similar academic abilities, if your kids are three years apart they will be in different schools for as long as in the same ones, assuming they are in the K-5, MS, HS environment which is true for vast majority of NYC public school students. [ Reply | More ]

Middle school and high school kids usually go to school without a parent. The above poster is talking about elementary-aged siblings. [ Reply | More ]

I think that when you start making the G&T testing more accessible to children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, you will probably start finding more and more students attending city-wides from the outer boroughs, and more families struggling to make the commute for their children. The fact that the DOE is recognizing how difficult it might be for families to have children in school in different boroughs will start breaking the class barriers that have denied so many poor gifted children a decent education. It's a central borough as far as commuting. If there is one on Staten Island or Bronx nobody from other boroughs will go there anyway. [ Reply | More ]

But if there are enough kids in an outer borough for a school, there is no reason that SI, Bronx, Brooklyn kids should have to commute 1-1/2 hours each way in elementary school, or not be able to attend an all gifted program. [ Reply | More ]

Therefore, the sibling policy is friendly to families of poorer children commuting in from Staten Island, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens. Also, many of these families are not able to afford a nanny to pick up child #2 at another school. Additionally, the DOE is not giving priority to siblings who don't qualify for Nest, TAG or Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

How can they get priority? If they don't qualify, they don't qualify. [ Reply | More ]

The city-wides are reserved for students scoring above the 97th percentile. The DOE will spots for siblings scoring above the 97th for Anderson before the rest of the 99s are given admission. From my understanding, very few siblings qualified. I'm not sure why people are attacking the policy. Keep families together. It's better for the kids and the schools. Families with more than 1 kid in a school tend to contribute more and do more work for the school. [ Reply | More ]

My point is if the sibling does not score 97+ there is nothing DOE can do. And btw, a lof of involved families are those of onlies actually. They seem to have most disposable time on their hands. [ Reply | More ]
