They are silly in a general sense, but I enjoy comparing a specific private to a specific public if people have a choice, but you can always collapse. Litte dash at beginning of the OP. Then they won't bother you. [ Reply | More

I agree. Like 158 vs. a UB second tier; Dalton vs. Hunter/Anderson; LL or PS6; Anderson the Tribeca school is also a toughie. I also understand there are many people that live in poor areas and have very little money, but on UB I get the feeling there are a disproportionate number of people that don't see private NYC schools as a luxury option that everyone isn't entitled to. I love the city but if I can't afford a good zone/am not happy with my choices I will move somewhere with good schools. [ Reply | More

I actually didn't tour it yet. The test scores do not look very good. It's actually sad b/c if you look at the zone map, there are maybe six "bad" streets and then I guess no one sent their kids there and they have a separate G&T... I know I'm part of the problem, but I want to send DD somewhere with good scores. I think I am going to try to tour 158 & 290 and look into 59. I toured 6 but the zone is so expensive. [ Reply | More

Yes, tour as many as you can. You get better and better at it. Try the following, 158, 40, 116, 212, 150, 3, 6, 59 and 198. That will give you a really good look at the schools and show you how incredibly different they are from one another. Then when you have it narrowed down to a couple, go to pick up and drop off and ask moms some quick questions - and go to the closes public playground after school and just sit near a group of women engaged in heated conversation - chances are they are talking about the school - you learn SO much that way. The report cards (the write up) are also telling. Ours was right on. Good luck. Oh, and tour some of the privates too - Cathedral, Dalton, UNIS - then you can compare. I had a blast looking. I"m not sure why you posted this. I suggested you tour 116 to get an idea of a traditional school - never said anything about their g&t programs? When her time comes, she should tour ALL the g&t programs that are available as she will need to rank options. Just like I said. [ Reply | More
