I am not in NYC anymore, but I am very curious about the test kids have to take to get into pre-K. What do the tests consist of? My DD is 4, so I'm curious about what would be expected of her if we still lived there. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No test to get into pre-K (except for one preschool: Hollingworth). The tests are for K. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter, a gifted public school, requires the Stanford Binet IQ test. Most private schools require the "ERB", a form of the WPPSI IQ test. Public G&T schools & programs require the OLSAT, another test mostly used for school readiness. [ Reply | More ]

np: you are asking about the ERB (for Private) which can be taken for Prek and K admission. Also there is the SB for Hunter and the Olsat for G&T publics [ Reply | More ]

ERB (for private schools), OLSAT/Bracken combo test for G&T and stanford binet for Hunter. Stanford Binet supposedly provides best indicator of IQ out of the three - but everyone says standardized tests for 4 year olds are sometimes unreliable. Each of the tests is about 45 mins long and is administered one-on-one for 4 year olds. [ Reply | More ]

For DOE G&Ts, it's the OLSAT and the BSRA. For Hunter, it's the Stanfor-Binet 5. For private schools, it's the WPPSI-III Revised. See Google for details. [ Reply | More ]

As for what the tests are like SB and ERB have them copy a block design, measure their vocabulary, and do exercieis in things like similarities, what comes next. [ Reply | More ]

And they're not required. Only if you want to send dc to private school or one of the public G&Ts. I'm lumping Hunter in with the latter. [ Reply | More ]

does not apply to public unless you're looking to get into a G&T program [ Reply | More ]
