Anyone know whether P.S. 19 is any good? We just got rezoned from P.S. 40 to 19. I'm really sickened by this. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

OMG, are you serious? That truly sucks. How is that even possible? They're in 2 different districts. [ Reply | More ]

Yep, now we're looking into privates for dd, not sure what the story is for 19, haven't heard anything particularly good about it. [ Reply | More ]

It's our zoned school, and it's not a good one. I've heard they're getting G&T next year, so maybe that will help? Where do you live, generally? I don't understand how the DOE can just suddenly redraw district boundaries like this. It would be slightly more understandable if they were both in D1 or both in D2, but WTF? [ Reply | More ]

The DOE did not redraw anything. This is how rumors get started. [ Reply | More ]

Are you in Stuyvesant Town? Most buildings are zoned for PS 19. In the past, PS 40 used to admit Stuyvesant families zoned for PS19, but I think those days are gone. [ Reply | More ]

Not OP, but according to the DOE part of Stuy Town is actually within the D2 boundary zoned for 40. [ Reply | More ]

Yep, in Stuy Town. Our neighbors (same building, same FLOOR!) have 2 kids going to PS 40. Now, we're district 1, zoned for PS 19. It really sucks. [ Reply | More ]

np. Are you sure you weren't district 1 all along? PS 40 did have space to admit some out-of-district dc up until a couple of years ago. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, definitely 40 before, but now they are probably over-crowded and rezoning (I imagine). [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry for you and don't mean to give you a hard time, but that doesn't sound right to me. Who originally told you you were zoned for 40, and who told you you've been rezoned for 19? I'm not seeing anything on the DOE web site about them redrawing districts, and this is sort of a big deal so I would expect it to be there. [ Reply | More ]

A couple of other neighbors (buildings nearby) are in my situation, they have people in their buildings with kids already in 40, and now we are zoned for 19. I haven't seen anything official, but 19 is definitely district 1, so something is going on. [ Reply | More ]

I understand, but I don't think you've actually been rezoned. Again, I'm sorry, I'm not trying to make you feel worse! The district boundary going through Stuy Town has been a source of confusion for years. Even the management there doesn't know which buildings are zoned for which schools, or else they've deliberately tried to mislead people I know who looked at apartments there. And PS 40 has taken D1 dc from Stuy Town in the past, because they had the space to do so, and that only added to the confusion. I'm pretty sure you've been D1 the whole time but didn't realize it and your neighbors lucked out and slipped in under the wire. Whatever the case may be, I'm truly sorry. I would be so upset in that situation. [ Reply | More ]

np: Not rezoning. It was a long-term error on the part of ps 40. they started this long ago and current administration realized it was an error. with overcrowdingn they are enforcing the lines. Our PSD warned us about this earlier this spring. [ Reply | More ]

There are some buildings in Stuy that ARE zoned for 40. I know this for a fact. We got a map and verified. Can you trade to one of those buildings. It's tricky - if you can trade and need help figuring out which ones start a new post and we can get togetther and I can show you on the map of Stuy where the district line runs. [ Reply | More ]

Isn't D1 going all lottery, all unzoned? Or something like that? I obviously don't live in the district. [ Reply | More ]

I just had a conversation with my friend about PS 19, which is her zoned school. She said that at the time of her tour she was the only parent (not a good sign). The student body was tough, but she was impressed by the quality of the teachers and the Principal. That was two years ago. Perhaps if enough like-minded families attend, that school might turn around. I would expect their G&T program to be quite good because schools like that typically put a lot of resources into the GT to attract framilies. [ Reply | More ]

The DOE did not rezone. Some of Stuy town has always been zoned for D1, ps19. While there may be some people in your building that got into 40 on a variance, that has nothing to do with the zoning. And to answer your question, D1 is not as good as D2 and 19 is not great. But, there are some progressive choice schools in D1 you should check out, Earth, Neighborhood. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]
