I'm hysterical. 13 weeks pregnant and my OBGYN told me to find a new doctor (I complained about the lack of communication and rude staff). I don't know where to go....Hundreds of doctors in my plan--all just names in a book. I'm in Brooklyn and don't want to travel to the Upper East Side. I'm so scared no one will see me. The prenatal screening options can be very confusing. I am a genetic counselor in Bklyn, and I spend a lot of time explaining the difference to both the patients and the providers. Do you mind if I ask what OB office you went to? I used Dr. Carmen Llopiz out of Maimonides. I loved her, but I can't say I was happy with the hospital at the time of delivery. I can recommend a few folks that I work with (the ones that know their stuff, obviously) that my patients are really, really happy with. I will watch the post. [ Reply | More

Listen, you didn't do anything wrong. Nighttime is a cruel crowd - you know that. Sounds like your ob was very unprofessional. I was very confused on the screenings and asked a thousand questions. When one dr was rude to me I told the head of the practice and he apologized profusely and said it was completely uncalled for. It is their jobs to explain in depth all these confusing tests, etc. You are better off with a new dr. You have time to find one. Wish I could help. Try not to cry. [ Reply | More

Answering questions is part of their job, tolerating abuse is not. Docs don't "fire" patients unless there is something serious happening, i.e., if the doc was told that the patient was cursing at her staff. [ Reply | More

I agree it is wrong for staff to be rude or seem impatient. But it definitely helps to chat with them since you end up in your OB's office so much. It helps when you develop a relationship with the nursing and admin staff [ Reply | More

I just want to counter some of the nastiness you are experiencing--your situation sucks, and I believe you that the staff probably was rude and communication was poor. Unfortunately, that is just the way it is. I've come to accept this. I'm from a family of physicians. On the one hand, they can't believe the lousy service I receive from drs who take no insurance. On the other hand, I know my brother has had a lot of trouble with his staff. Dr's offices are rarely well managed. In part, it is the nature of the beast--patients and their problems are unpredictable, offices that take insurance must spend a lot of time on the phone with insurance cos instead ofpatients. Physician here. My office staff sucks. Rude. Incompetent. Unfortunately part of group practice so office staff doesn't answer to me, only to the office manager. I have no hire fire control so it translates to crappy service. I spend half my office visits apologizing to my patients. I feel for my patients, but at the same time they get what they pay for (if they have managed care), a cash only practice should be expected to provide higher level of service. [ Reply | More

It sounds like you may be having a really hard time emotionally, maybe more so than usual because of the pregnancy. You've probably found an ob by now, but if not, you might also consider a reproductive psychiatrist. There are a few in the City.
