did anyone here have a home-birth? starting to consider this for #2 (due late summer) and wondering if anyone has good/bad experiences to share. (and for nyc moms, if you have midwife to recommend, i'd appreciate it.) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i can't imagine why you'd want to do this. my friend did it but only b/c she insisted on helping her older dd get dressed before leaving for the hospital. but by then it was too late. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't. Did you see the health channel home birst - she delivered twins in breach position. She and babies were fine, but I never could have done it - not that brave. [ Reply | More ]

>> she's not having twins and if she found out the baby was breech she has the option of going to the hospital. i'm not seeing how this example relates to her. [ Reply | More ]

for me, the stay in teh hospital is like being in a hotel. they bring you food whenever you want, and it is good, you can get help, and they will help you sleep for about the last time ever. i wish i couls stay there longer. plus, after each of my births the custodian had to come clean up afterwrads because i make a massive mess of blood and fluid. i'm a bleeder and i certianly don't need that mess in my own home. My cousin's wife decided to have a home birth and panicked at the last minute and decided to go to the hosp. She had the baby on her lawn. [ Reply | More ]

I wanted to do a birth center birth. But 50 hours into labor, the baby's heart rate fell to a dangerous level and I needed a crash c-section. I'm really glad I chose a birthing center adjacent to a hospital. I still had my c-section in the ER though. [ Reply | More ]

from op: was this your 1st dc? i know several women who have had home births for their 2nd dc, and subsequent labors are usually faster than the first one. [ Reply | More ]

This was my second. I thought it would be as smooth as my first. But I went into labor, went to the birthing center, spent THREE nights there, and then had to be rushed to the ER. It was a nightmare. [ Reply | More ]

yikes. sorry to hear that you had such a nightmare experience. my 1st labor was pretty smooth and relatively short, so i'm hopeful. i just really really disliked the whole hospital experience w/ #1. maybe i'm romanticizing homebirth a little...but it sounds so much nicer than going back to the hospital. thanks for sharing your experience. had one for #1. Long labor (to be expected with the first), but I was in great hands & always felt that both the baby & I were being monitored enough & totally safe. It was so nice being at home...the baby sleeps ALOT the first day, so "help" from the nurses didn't really seem like a big benefit we missed out on in the hospital. Cara Muhlhahn was my midwife...she's amazing. Good luck!! I'll check back occasionally to see if you have any other questions. [ Reply | More ]
