You should check out Long Island City. It's directly across the east river from midtown-east/low UES. Rents are way cheaper than Manhattan, but lots of nice new buildings. Also, if you are willing to live in a walk up building, you can probably find something reasonable on the UES, but closer to the East River/York Ave than, say, Park Ave. [ Reply | More

first of all, in NYC, only the rich live in 3 bedroom apartments. Serious, it's not a MUST in NYC. I know families with higher incomes than yours with 3 kids in a 2 bedroom. Second, on that income, you can't afford more than 3K month in rent. You will need to be in Queens definately. The parts of brooklyn you could afford would be well over an hour from your husband's work. My best suggestion is Roosevelt Island. very close to your husband's work, much more space for the money than anything else close to where he works, and there are several buildings there reserved for middle class families.
