I have a neighbor who, when her kids come to play at my house, uses the opportunity to run errands or shuttle her other kids around. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Except it always takes longer than she says and her kids start getting edgy and I can't send them home because no one is there. Kids are 8 and 3 [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

You can't do crisis management? I bet you only have one child right? [ Reply | More ]

my life is crisis management and I have 2 kids. I'm just saying if she can't juggle her day, then don't have so many kids [ Reply | More ]

um, feel free to judge her if she can't manage a crisis with her own kids -- but the whole point is that these are not her kids, and there is a pattern of being taken advantage of with this particular person [ Reply | More ]

I think 3 is a little young to be going on drop off playdates without parent within 5 min. Tell her you enjoy having the kids but feel a little overwhelmed when things stretch out a little too long. [ Reply | More ]

agree -- unless you're the agreed-upon babysitter, she should never be dropping off a 3-year-old [ Reply | More ]

my 4 yo and her 3 yo play together, and I don't mind, but it never fails, as soon as the other mom has figured out she's free of 2 kids...she outta here with the other handful of kiddies [ Reply | More ]

do you have her cell#? get in the habit of calling the SECOND they start to wane, because it will take her time to get back from wherever she's gone off to, and you don't want to wait until they're nuts, but also to reinforce (thriugh the repeat calls) that she's consistently gone too long [ Reply | More ]

I had a neighbor do this ALL the time. "be back in just a minute" Once she did it to the babysitter. The last time she was late and called from cell, I said "no rush, the kids are just checking out dhs gun collection" (we don;t have guns) She hasn't been late since. [ Reply | More ]

next tie she brings them over either ask her to stay or say as she's leaving "you're going to be home, right? i want to make sure you're right across the street (or wherever she lives) in case we need you again (like how last time NAME got sick, or whatever)" [ Reply | More ]

you shouldn't do open-ended playdates. arrange for her to pick up the kids at 4:00 -- if after that she's consistently late, say something [ Reply | More ]
