I don't get the "depression must be treated" attitude. It is perfectly fine to feel sad sometime. Why people want to be happy all the time by altering their mood with medications? Why feeling blue is so socially-unacceptable? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Wow, why don't people make the same choices you do? Why can't everybody be tough and strong like yourself? SO ARROGANT. Depression isn't about feeling "sad" or "blue." Pay attention. It's worse than that. It drives people to suicide sometimes. [ Reply | More ]

This is like saying, Why don't people go through allergy season without decongestant, or the flu without aspirin? It is a chemical imbalance, corrected with medication. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. Sometimes bad things happen in life and it is totally normal to feel sad and even depressed in reaction to them. But, if someone is really chemically depressed with no real reason or cannot function for long periods of time or wants to hurt herself, I think meds are a wonderful tool to have. [ Reply | More ]

np but do you agree that many people take these meds for firvolous reasons? I had a friend who once took them b/c her boyfriend of 2 months broke up with her just to "take the edge off". That is ridiculous! You have to learn to deal with life at some point [ Reply | More ]

One idiot friend does not a cohort of suffering people make. That's a brainless generalization. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe this is what she told you. You have no idea how it felt to her - perhaps she realized it felt worse than it should have and she needed help. [ Reply | More ]

sigh. My point is that often people take them when they should very well learn to deal with sadness and loss in life. I think they are wonderful when really needed. I think OP is right that we don't accept sadness as a part of life anymore. We want to wish it away. I also had a friend who was suicidal and took them. I am happy they were available for her. but...ssri's don't make you feel high or "wonderful" or even, necessarily, less sad. [ Reply | More ]

they don't even work that way. situational depression exists but it would take at least a few weeks for any ssri to build up in your system. no point in taking them for 2 months. [ Reply | More ]

I know that! That is why I couldn't believe her therapist gave them to her! And that she was so stupid to believe it! Maybe they gave her a placebo and she felt better, who knows [ Reply | More ]

op: What I am trying to say is that there are way too many people taking depression drugs to treat BAD MOOD, not depression. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks to pharmaceutical marketing. OP, you weren't clear, if that was your intent. It sounded like you thought real, life-altering depression were just a bad mood that needed to be toughed out. [ Reply | More ]

i disagree. i think a lot of people end up taking medication for depression that could be worked out in other ways. but i'm not sure if i think that's a very bad thing. [ Reply | More ]

Obviously you have never been seriously depressed for long periods of time. It's not just feeling sad. It's being unable to even function and having that affect your family. [ Reply | More ]
