4yo has copied his preschool friends and started the horrible process of name-calling. You're a baby, you're a car, you're a Power Ranger head, you're a horse. Yesterday, he called a babysitter who was over watching his younger brother a "monkey" and guess what, she's black. (He calls his brother that too, and doesn't mean it in the slur sense). We're teaching him to lay off the name calling, but other than that, what are you doing at this age to teach sensitivity to people with disabilities, different races, etc? And what should I have said to her? I corrected him in front of her, but didn't make a big deal about it....thanks! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

np: i disagree. i think calling someone a fatso is bad. calling someone a monkey when it was not meant as a racist slur is not bad. i do think it has to be addressed, but it's not time-out worthy. [ Reply | More

i don't allow name calling but i only send for timeouts or any kind of punishment/consequence if it's a bad name. (doodyhead is usually the favorite in my house) [ Reply | More

He wasn't being racist - no reason to make a big deal out of that incident. I would just try to talk about name calling on a regular basis, how it isn't nice, hurts feelings, etc... We are in the poopy head phase here.. ugh. [ Reply | More

I actually think its pretty funny -- not because its o.k. but he's just a kid and I'm sure you were horrified. Hopefully she knows he didn't mean anything (racial) by it. Don't make too much of a big deal, talk to him about how it makes him feel when someone calls him names and teach him to be sensitive to someone's feeling is the way to go. [ Reply | More
