Do you think the less a kid has, the more they will do. It seems like the greatest artists, minds etc were the ones who had to struggle. I'm starting to think that when I buy every art supply imaginable for my 5 yo to paint with, it sort of kills her desire to paint. Any thoughts on this? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

well, there are two things...first of all, yes, indulgence and coddling do stifle passion and drive. there are all kinds of struggle, i mean, people can struggle to overcome the coddling, but that goes against most people's grains. just human nature. second of all, 5 year olds don't really work on that level so don't worry about it [ Reply | More ]

^for most of our generation, you had self esteem DESPITE your family, not because of it. this new trend to tell a kid "you're the best at everything and anyone who says otherwise is a damn fool" is so crazy to me [ Reply | More ]

i don't think so. i do think you can spoil a child and give them too much and it kills their desire and incentive. but i don't think a person has to struggle to acheive greatness. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it is always related. I do think that if you give a kid everything and expect nothing, you are setting him/her up for a life of disapointed entitlement though. There is nothing wrong wtih giving your kid tools he/she needs to learn things like art or music, but you should probably make him earn some of what he needs or wants at some point. 5 may be a little early but whenever you give an allowance, he should pay for some extras. I don't think it's al;ways related. I admire people who have bootstrapped themselves to success and there are a lot of them, it seems, but I grew up relatively wealthy and was very, very driven. I think it was pure competitiveness. I will say, however, that my parents never overindulged us. I am trying to do the same with DC. It's hard. [ Reply | More ]
