It's a long drive, but we always do it (been going there since I was a kid). Back then we would split up the drive, stay over night somewhere. Now we drive straight through. You will want a car whether you fly or drive. [ Reply | More ]

how long is the drive? and do you know which areas are worth staying in, i.e. near the beach? where would you stop along the way? [ Reply | More ]

My parents have a place in Duck. But Corolla is also very popular. It has grown a lot and there is plenty to do for kids. Once we stopped in DC, Salisbury, MD, any of those places on the Eastern Shore in MD. But we always take Rt. 13, not 95. The drive is about 8-9 hours. [ Reply | More ]

we went twice, once stayed in Kill Devil Hills - in a condo - lots of kid things to do there. definitely need a car whereever you are there. Second time stayed in 3BR house further north in Corolla, its much quieter up there, was about 15 mins to even go get ice cream at night. depends on what you want. we drove, 9 hrs from north jersey. depends on if you mind that drive. it's nice, but a HUGE pain to get to (8-10 hour drive, or fly then drive 2 hours). i love the hamptons, or i think Cape May is just as nice and a lot easier to get to. Cape Cod is great too. [ Reply | More ]

NP. Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard are way overrated. NJ is not rural but has better beaches. [ Reply | More ]

try south carolina instead, easier to get to, more options for eating out, etc. look in litchfield, pawley's island. the flight is an hour and a half and it's a half four drive from the airport. go for a condo, then you'll also have a pool for the little one [ Reply | More ]

Been to the Outerbanks a few times, but it's a little too laid back for me. I prefer Virginia Beach. There's a nice section of houses that has Outerbanks feel, but you have mini-golf, nature center and good restaurants nearby, plus shorter drive. Check out va beach real estate. good luck [ Reply | More ]
