What is the best way to get rid of the pacifier of a 16 month old? Cold turkey or cut a small hole in the bulb part? (She currently only uses it in the crib, but her ped says we need to stop completely because of ear infections.) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Probably cold turkey, but fwiw, I don't know that it will do anything for ear infections. My db was getting a ton when he was in daycare. After he got out of daycare, he stopped getting them, even though he started using the paci again at night afterwards. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Yeah, I wonder if it will really help. I hate to get rid of it so early, she's still such a baby. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. I'm the poster above and my db is 19 mo and he sleeps so well at night with the paci, I have no intention of trying to wean him. It's the summer now so your db probably will get fewer colds (and therefore ear infections) anyway. My bet is your ped is grasping at straws. Have you taken her to an ENT? I found that much more informative than dealing with my ped. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Not an ENT yet, but she just had such a bad infection that the oral antibiotics didn't work and she had to get an antibiotic injection three days in a row and it was AWFUL. Do not want her to have to go through that again. Since she only uses it in the crib now, I am not sure if we will get rid of it though. [ Reply | More ]

cold turkey -- cutting the tip works with older toddlers because they think it's broken. a 16 mo wouldn't get it. [ Reply | More ]

OP: That's what I was thinking too. We did that with my older dd when she was 2. [ Reply | More ]
