If there are so many dc that score very high and not enough G&T classes, couldn't they just make the curriculum more challenging for everyone and have a few slower paced classes for those who need it. It seems that kids are more advance these days than they ever were, so adapting to the times might the most beneficial for everyone. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

or just track kids more. We got divided for math, reading, etc. and taken out once a week for a special class. You don't need your own school if you are smart. [ Reply | More ]

In district 2 the curriculum for the g&t classes is the exact same as the general ed classes already [ Reply | More ]

the curriculum may be the same, but the deapth of study is more advanced. sit in on a 1st grade class at, say, 158, and one at, say, LL, and you see the difference. [ Reply | More ]

lolol. Most kids have trouble meeting the grade standards, so more challenging curriculum across the board is not likely to be a workable answer. [ Reply | More ]

But there aren't "so many" dc that score very high. The DOE had to lower the cutoff score to 90% from 95% to get enough dc, and even then we're still talking about a small fraction of the total student population. People don't want to here this, but we need to bring back tracking. It be done by subject, so a dc who's strong in one area but average or weak in another can be properly accommodated in all those areas, and fluid enough so dc can enter and exit different levels during the school year. I know, I've been here all week. It's the timing. G&T applications were just due back and now everyone whose d applied is waiting on tenterhooks. In mid-February when all the private school applicants were waiting for the letters to be mailed you might have thought it was all private school families here. A couple of weeks after that it was all about the preschool applicants. Just wait, I've started seeing a few ERB test questions and inquiries about applying to Hunter. The cycle's about to start over. [ Reply | More ]

That sounds awfully like the out-of-fashion-with-the-DOE, un-PC notion of tracking. No way will they bring it back (much to my dismay). [ Reply | More ]

I don't know, it seems like these things always go in cycles. It may take another 15+ years but it'll come back eventually. Just as soon as our dc graduate most likely. [ Reply | More ]

np: I love how they'd rather hurt kids at every level by not giving them what they need rather than risk "labeling" them. [ Reply | More ]

Well, you see, it's fairer if you hurt them ALL. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not finding life any easier at one of the "great" districts in NJ. All they seem to care about is tests here, my first-grader is spending all day at a desk with drill sheets. If it weren't for all the posts here, I might be missing NYC. [ Reply | More ]

NP. Oh, that's interesting. It is crazy - in Millburn for example - I looked at some test scores and pretty much every kid passes. I also saw that there were two articles this weekend about how stressful kids in the top HS in the suburbs are. They were skipping lunches to study/take more classes. [ Reply | More ]

He was home sick for 4 days last week. 20 double-sided drill sheets were sent home for him to catch up. They are doing an average of 60 addition problems a day. [ Reply | More ]

Ugh! I know, you want them to have a good education/great opportunities, but not to be stressed out over this stuff. My junior year was really, really hard but otherwise I played outside and really wasn't that stressed and I went to two Ivies and got good grades. [ Reply | More ]

I'm grateful to miss the whole middle school applications, all the fear and loathing the NYC process generates. But DS's old school was teaching the love of learning, here he is being taught to take tests. [ Reply | More ]
