If they are going strictly by score and not gender balancing, does that mean Anderson will be filled with all white girls? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm sure they'll score high but there aren't as many of them. [ Reply | More ]

No, because they're not going strictly by score. They'll have a lottery for placement, starting with the 99s. There will probably still be a disproportionate number of girls and white dc, but the lottery will help to even it out some. [ Reply | More ]

then its not a real lottery, no? [ Reply | More ]

But it's just that a lottery - there is no way of ensuring it is balanced or not [ Reply | More ]

The Doe is so corrupt and evil they will make sure that this class is not so skewed. They want to be right even if it ruins a great school [ Reply | More ]

not sure what you are saying. are you for balancing per other variables, or not? [ Reply | More ]

in the end it makes no difference. anderson will get smart kids, and presumably they are equipped to educate them. you people are too caught up in some ideal and the school's mission. It has hurt anderson to hold on to this position, and they need to join the real world. they need to give up some of their need for specialness. it is unattractive and unhealthy, not to mention that its a fantasy. ITD--this methodology has worked for 20 years and made a great school why would you change something that has worked so well? The DOE is responding to a lawsuit and covering themselves but their actions are creating exactly the opposite [ Reply | More ]

the doe is being responsible, and their methods are reasonable. change is good and there are many reasons to change. that a school is good does not mean that access has been fair or equitable, or that it couldn't be better. this constant lament by anderson people saying it has worked well thus far does not cut it. they say that because it served them since their kids got in. others could do well there as well, and the access to the school needs to be more fairly available to high scoring kids. I could not agree more. what is up with these anderson posters? why so afraid of change? why all this irrational investment and comparison to hunter? its weird frankly, and it gives the school a bad reputation. [ Reply | More ]

np--I for one, am happy to see the change. I think it will weed out the crazies in the school, and allowed for a more balanced, cohesive group that is not always "fighting to stay alive." I say "way to go doe!!!" [ Reply | More ]

to say when something isn't broke, do not fix it, does not apply to anderson. many did not like the onsite system, and felt favoritism and diversity/gender balancing were at play. it was not transparent and the doe is right to change the system. same for nest. seems very clear to me that the doe had to do something to change this. lawsuits happen for a reason, and the doe had to be responsive. how is making sure that the class is not skewed going to ruin the school? All of the eligible kids scored over 97%, no? [ Reply | More ]

If this process is so great why doesn't hunter use it? [ Reply | More ]

I never said that the process is great. You obviously have difficulties forming a rational argument. [ Reply | More ]

hunter has a different source of funding and so has different mandates. it really is not a question of one being better. hunter is not some proven gold standard against which to measure. country clubs screen and interview applicants too, but that process may be inappropriate for schools for gifted kids. until you have done some sort of controlled study comparing different methods, you have no basis for an argument that one is better than the other [ Reply | More ]

hunter does not have the resources to handle applications from 20-30,000 kids. the doe has to be responsive to all kids in all of nyc, not just the ones who can afford the time and money to take the sb/erb and write essays and come to an onsite...in other words the elite families of manhattan [ Reply | More ]

nnp: of course it won't ruin the school. the anderson moms on UB are delusional about what it means that their kid got in. they need a dose of humor...and need to direct it at themselves. [ Reply | More ]
