Is anyone else a little bit bothered by the overtly sexual ads in the subways? DCs look at them everyday and I feel a need to protect their innocence for a little while longer. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

you're making the ads into something more than they are and likely piquing dc's interest by trying to get dc NOT to look at them. "oh, dc, you can look at anything you want, anything at all -- EXCEPT that ad on the wall! don't look, dc, do not look!" what do you think dc is going to be most interested in looking at? Really dislike them. I wish companies would take some social responsibility. But I guess that would take away from their profit margin. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, laziness on their part. It's so much easier to put semi-naked suggestive images to get some attention. [ Reply | More ]

I put the blame on the MTA and NYC/NYS elected officials. Those are the ones who should be looking out for our kids/our interest. Advertiser/companies are accountable to their clients and their shareholders. Send a letter to Budweiser. Tell them you and your family are boycotting them for a year. After that time you will re-evaluate their subway porn. If it is still disrespectful... you will boycott till June 1, 2010. Repeat for __________ vodka/rum/rum mixers/wine coolers/etc. [ Reply | More ]

I called my NYC Council rep, and they said that unfortunately, these companies are protected under the Freedom of Information Act. She did suggest I call 311 and lodge a complaint, which would then be forwarded to Consumer Affairs. [ Reply | More ]

Contact MTA. See if they have an office of standards or something like that. Find out what the process is before you go on. Once you know that you can assess if it is a broken process or a lack of process. I would also post answers on UB/NY Board. You aren't alone. [ Reply | More ]

i think ads in general all over are sexualized. there is a billboard on a street i drive by all the time with these naked women, their backs are facing out with band logos drawn on them. i think it's for 92.3! it's crazy. [ Reply | More ]

But that billboard is privately owned. If you are doing it on a public space, you need to be sensitive to the public. [ Reply | More ]

Are you purposely obtuse or did you really not understand the difference between adds placed in the MTA's subways (public space) and on the side of a building (private space.) To be clear, if it is privately owned property, then I don't want the government setting up censors for this kind of stuff. Let the public and the advertisers hash it out. But on things like city's busses... [ Reply | More ]

Confused, is that because you think private citizens don't have a right to say what is/is not done with their property OR because you don't think the citizens have a right to say what a private company can't put up on our public property? [ Reply | More ]

it's really both. i dont understand why these women have to be naked with paint on their backs. what does that have to do with a radio station? it's gratuitous. i also don't think kids need to see this as well. [ Reply | More ]

While I agree with the former I have to disagree with the latter. You don't have to shield your children from nudity (which, in this case, is not really even that). [ Reply | More ]

NP above: I think you're splitting hairs in this particular case. You want the poster to concede that she shouldn't mind seeing a naked body a la in an anatomy book being posted on the billboard. [ Reply | More ]

np: Well, if advertisers ever showed just a normal naked body with no message about selling or sex, I might be ok with nudity on a billboard. But unless the ad is for a physiology textbook, I don't know how or when that would happen. So for that reason, I generally oppose nudity in advertisements. [ Reply | More ]
