3 yr old was fooling around at dinner - putting food in his water, banging silverwear, dropping them on the floor and generally being obnoxious. after a number of warnings - we said he was done. 2-0 minutes later he was clammeing for desert 9which is usually fruit) and we said no. (I did say if he was hungry he could have milk - which he rejected as "not food'). he was having a total meltdown. now he is in the bath - but I expect meltdown to resume and that it will result in a very late bedtime. DH wants to cave and offer him some fruit before bed and I say no way! His table manners have been horrible and every meal has been a messy nightmare lately. WWYD? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'd put him to bed with no dinner. [ Reply | More ]

The one thing I can't stomach (pardon the pun) is a hungry kid. I would give him fruit and next time make the consequence something non food related. [ Reply | More ]

If you truly think he is hungry, offer him the rest of dinner. This is not quite consistent, but it would be mean to let him go truly hungry. [ Reply | More ]

So NO WAY it's not even funny. Why would you go through all you went through already and then cave? What kind of a lesson is that? "If you stick it out long enough, they'll eventually cave. Next time: Six hours." [ Reply | More ]

No way. The evening is going to suck. Early bedtime and call it a day. [ Reply | More ]

i'd say that if he's hungry he can have a piece of cheese. (or bread, or whatever you ate for supper). if he persists, say calmly that he can not have dessert b/c he did not sit nicely at dinner but that if he's hungry, he can have cheese (or bread). [ Reply | More ]

OP - i think his cold corn and cold chicken (2 things he actually eats) - are still on the counter! [ Reply | More ]

i'd offer one of them. not as a punishment ("eat what's left of your dinner!") but as an option if he's hungry. but definitely don't cave on the dessert issue. and again, make it an option for him, not a punishment or an angry thing. [ Reply | More ]

NP: the trick is to act like you are just informing him of a law of physics. Gravity keeps you on the earth. Dessert is for people who behave well at dinner. [ Reply | More ]

ita. if you keep it away from a "YOU broke MY rule", it doesn't become as much of a conflict. [ Reply | More ]

in our house if you can not follow the rules and be polite you are given a warning and then after that you are sent to bed immediately following the meal. it usually works because if you are sent to bed you are missing the board games we play as a family every night and also any snack you might be given.
