Any idea why it's called Fire Island? 6yo DS has asked. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I was under the impression it was named that because pirates used to set fires on the island to get boats to think they were sailing/landing inland. The ships would then run aground and could be taken over. Coney Island is named after the dutch word for rabbit (conijn). This is also the root for the "c" sland word for a vagina. (Many slangs for women/vaginas have rabbit origins.) And with that, I'm going home. [ Reply | More ]

Coney is the English word for rabbit, too [ Reply | More ]

It was Henry Hudson's Dutch crew members who went ashore and found all the rabbits. I was trying to find out for a class who first set foot on NY. This was the best I could find. (I was teaching special ed at the time and we had this thing, if they stumped me they got to pic Friday activity. It had to be a question related to work from that week.) I happened to also be taking a lit class and reading Tropic of Cancer and was doing research on "cunt" ironically the two went together. Otherwise I probably wouldn't remember either. (I did not share the ironic Henry Miller research with my class.) [ Reply | More ]

Unfortunatley there no evidence of wrecks to support this story, but it sounds nice. [ Reply | More ]

Fire Islands coast is pure sand. I don't think the goal was to wreck the boat, it was to run it aground then capture it and take it. (I wikipedia'ed this. It has this and several other stories. I think I heard that story in junior high school when we did a field trip there.) [ Reply | More ]

On early 18th century maps a bunch of islands off Long Island's south shore were written as "Five Islands". In later maps it got changed to Fire Island. Not very exciting, but true [ Reply | More ]

On 17th century maps the area said FIVE ISLANDS. In subsequent maps it was mistakenly changed to FIRE ISLAND. I believe this, there's no evidence of pirate activity in the area. [ Reply | More ]
