My friend had her 3yo at her home birth. The kid even touched her sibling's head as it crowned! Ack to me, worked for them. Kid doesn't seem injured by the experience. [ Reply | More

They showed this kind of thing in the Business of Being Born, and I've read about a lot of kids at home births. I would definitely have the sibling involved at a home birth, but not in the hospital, which is a scary unfamiliar environment. [ Reply | More

Maybe that is the difference. I think a lot depends on the child and also what you and DH are like in general. My friends live the life of people who give birth at home, DH and I tend to run to the doctor for a little nothing. [ Reply | More

In the movie, the couple that did this was very zen and in a kind of special psychic zone. Bore no resemblance at all to my experience in the hospital. Kids don't give a crap about the gore, they just want everything to feel safe and normal. Not really possible in your typical hospital setting with all the bustle and tubes and bright lights and intervention. [ Reply | More

There's a book these people should check out and buy for their kid. It's called "Welcome With Love," and it's specifically about a dc watching sibling being born. It's a home birth setting, but would also apply to hospital birth, I'm guessing. [ Reply | More
