Help us! db's (7 mo) new thing is waking up at 5:30am which could be tolerable IF he didn't wake at 3:30 for a feed. We've tried earlier bedtime, later bedtime, everything. I'm so pooped here. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

CIO for the 3:30 feed. As for the wake-up time, it may just be how he's wired. My 19 mo still wakes at 5:30. We handle it by taking turns getting up with him while the other one sleeps. [ Reply | More ]

yeah, we're discussing ferberizing (which we swore we would never, hah) so that may be the deal. i'm very ready to drop the middle of the night bf.... [ Reply | More ]

I did Ferber and waited until 13 mo. Please don't make the same mistake as me! It was such a relief to get him sleeping through the night. [ Reply | More ]

you could have waited another couple of months and he would have slept much better w/o the need to make him cry. [ Reply | More ]

ita. hes totally old enough to cio. when is bedtime now? you could also leave him be at 5:30 and see if he goes back to sleep. thats what we do. works most of the time at least till 6:30 or so (knock wood) [ Reply | More ]

i was curious. my ds goes down between 7:30 and 7:45 so if he sleeps till 6:30 im more than satisfied, but if your db is sleeping from 6:30 to 5:30 its really the same thing. I just cant do 5:30 am. I just cant [ Reply | More ]

so incrementally put him down a bit later each night (by 10 minutes or so) and see if it helps. Even if you don't want to do Ferber yet, there is a chapter that discusses early waking as a sleep issue that might have some solutions to your problem that won't include cio. [ Reply | More ]

stop doing the 3:30 feed, first of all. Get that one resolved before worrying about the wake up time. Just go in and soothe, maybe offer water, but no food. He'll stop waking for it once he knows he's not getting anything good. [ Reply | More ]

send DH in to soothe. Eventually you might just find it easier to CIO. We did, after trying lots of other things, and it was quick. He still loves us. [ Reply | More ]

the kid is only 7 months old. let him have his feedings. You will get used to the wakings. I have three kids at home and none of them slept mostly through the night before they were around 1.5 years of age. By 2.5 they all slept like rocks at night. Take it day by day and have DH help you out at night! [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, but getting used to the wakings for 1.5 years for each kid? That's crazy. A good nights sleep benefits you and the dc. A little cio never hurt anyone. [ Reply | More ]

Why is that crazy? DH and I shared the responsibilities at night and we both got enough sleep. The kids didn't suffer at all because we soothed them back to sleep very quickly. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, but I am a working mom with a working DH. We just sat it out. The first months with #1 were really hard but then our bodies got used to it. By the time #2 and #3 came to this world we were able to live with minimum sleep. The human body is capable of a lot of things but most are not willing to go through the "training process". Some of us don't have dh's that can help with night time responsibilities. Continuous sleep is good for all parties. I think expecting 1.5 years of not enough sleep per child is a bit crazy. [ Reply | More ]

I dont think that will be the result. you should do what you think will be best for you in the end. I WOH full time and neither of us wanted to be up at night with ds even tho we love him. so we knew we had to do whatever we could to get him sleeping thru the night [ Reply | More ]

you wont know unless you try. every kid is different. in my case I learned it would only take a few minutes of crying and was well worth it. I also learned my ds almost has to cry a little to blow off steam and get to sleep. [ Reply | More ]

The amount of CIO (little or not) depends on the child, though. Some kids don't respond to CIO at all, some need more than a little. If your kid really only needs a little but of crying you don't really have a problem at your hands. [ Reply | More ]

np - this is your choice, but it's not necessary is what most of us are trying to tell OP - you don't win points for nursing your 3 kids during the night until 1.5 - and fwiw no ped recs this [ Reply | More ]

no ped recommends night feeding after a certian age. at that point its just a crutch and you are doing more of a disservice not having already taught db the tools to soothe herself [ Reply | More ]

"disservice"? My kids got weaned from night feedings when they were weaned of the breast (between 10 and 14 months). No harm done with that. Btw, all peds, eh? Not the ones I am in touch with. The ones that give me bollocks advise like that will not retain my children as patients. [ Reply | More ]

you can still bf your kids at that age and not have them waking at night to feed. They eat plenty during the day unless youre starving them. thats just plain too old to wake at night to feed. But you do what you want and Ill do what I want. [ Reply | More ]

you don't get it, do you? You do not have to teach your child to self-soothe. They do this all by themselves as soon as they are mature enough. If you are in a hurry, of course, you don't have to wait that long and force them to so. I do not do that to my kids. That's me. Obviously, you think differently, so let your kids cry. actually, I do get it. You dont have to teach your kids lots of things that they will eventually learn on their own, but you do anyway. that is just silly. if you can help them learn this skill earlier, why woudlnt you. so, actually - my kid doesnt cry. And he sleeps, too and that is the point [ Reply | More ]
