DH and I are looking to spend about 550K for a house. There is a lot for sale in the town we are looking at. DH think we should buy it and build a house on it. I think that is a crazy idea! The lot is for sale for $300K (he thinks he can get it much lower because it's been sitting there) and it is covered in trees. Is this idea crazy??? It sounds like a HUGE undertaking and building a house can't be cheap, right? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

yes, that is crazy and keep in mind that it is much harder to get a loan for buying land and building than for buying a house. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ although I'm guessing at least part of it is that when you buy a house, the bank has an asset it can take back. When you say you're building a house, you just have plans, no actual asset. [ Reply | More ]

The owner of Blu Dot furniture has a kit house called FlatPak that's really cool. It's efficient, quality control as it's manufactured in a factory, and quick construction. But it's still pricey per sf. Worth checking out the website, tho. [ Reply | More ]

You are going to spend way more than $250K to build a house. You have to do all the paperwork with the town board, bring in utilities, clear trees/excavate. [ Reply | More ]

sounds like it would not be too much of a headache to research. Do you guys have "funky" ideas? I would consider it if what I want in a home is hard to find. [ Reply | More ]

no, we just want a regular house, but there's not much in the area within walking distance of the train that's in our range. [ Reply | More ]

Figure you'll pay a premium for custom. Builders save a lot of time knowing how to build lets say four models of home efficiently. On top of that, everytime you look at an item, you are gonna say, "Go with the good one. We're gonna be here for a long time..." That said, I would still look into it. [ Reply | More ]
